I Heard the Children Crying

Last night a devastating series of earthquakes rolled through Turkey and Syria. I watched in horror as the news got worse. I saw buildings collapse and people screaming. It was very noisy but the sound that wounded my heart is the sound of children crying. That sound cut through the clutter. They are just children terrified and pulled from their beds in the middle of a confusing night. They are not enemy children. Race, language, or religion do not matter in a humanitarian crisis. I wanted to go and comfort them all, bring them warm clothing, hot food, and love from the world. All I can do is pray for them. Did you hear the children crying?

I didn't watch the news and I seldom do for that very reason, so many horrible things happening and we can't do a thing about it.

That is the worst part. There is nothing we can do except pray for them. We can donate money but you never know if they are using it to care for people or lining someone's pocket.

@RubyHawk I think you are right. I can't go over there to help so I may end up donating. If I could go there, I could cook or take care of people but I don't know how I would last trying to rescue someone trapped in rubble.

@akalinus Donating is no good, unless you give it to the person in need.

I did not hear any of the children crying from the news reports of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. It doe break my heart to learn that innocent lives were lost in that earthquake.

@Deepizzaguy We lost our house in a fire once. I had to run around with the place on fire at 4 am and get all my children outside. That was bad but we went to a relative's house and had breakfast. It was 10 degrees F out there. The people in the earthquake were not as lucky as we were. I don't know what we would have done if we had to stay out in the snow and bitter cold.

@akalinus It is heartbreaking to see a tragic event like an earthquake, in the video I could heard moms acting concerned that their homes were affected by the earthquake.

I did not hear the children crying, but I've been watching the news and seeing the devastation. It's great that people care so much about each other in time of need, but I wish people would be kind to each other all the time and not only during disasters.

I love what you said. There is so much need in the world and so much anguish. A kind word, a smile, and a helping hand are welcome all the time.

@akalinus I have been reading things here and there but I cannot bring myself to watch any videos. Hearing any type of crying, especially children makes me become a wreck. Even reading your post had me in tears. Like you, I wish I could be helping in some way. So terrible.

The earthquake is over now and rescue teams are rushing there from many nations to look for people and to take care of the survivors. It will take years to rebuild.

I watched most all of it most of the night. It is so hard to hear those cries. Thousands of people gone. The earth shook and it killed them, and of course there is really no way to prevent earthquakes (not that I know of) and I do know it can basically happen any time, and it can happen anywhere. But oh, so sad. It's freezing there now, snow and ice, hardly the type of weather to be homeless!

The snow, the cold, buildings falling, the suddenness of it. I can't imagine how horrible it was for them.

@akalinus I feel badly for the rescuers as well, it has to be so hard to keep digging and finding bodies, and so forth, in hopes they can find the ones still alive. So very hard.

@MarieCoyle That must be the most stressful job there ever was. The cold and wet just add to the misery.

At least those who were crying were children alive, how many have lost their young life? In one day this quake made more deaths that the Ukraine/Russia war did in one year.

Yes, it is. I keep thinking about them, wondering if someone is giving them food or medical care.

I didn't watch the news. It's a horrible situation for everyone but most of all the children.

I heard about it but l could not watch. I am very sorry about what happened. Earthquakes are a possibility for any area that is in an earthquake zone, worse when it happens when people are sleeping. I am glad countries are rallying with assistance. This reminds me of the terrible earthquake that happened in Haiti a number of years ago.
