A fire blanket for the kitchen

Yesterday my husband and I went to the dentist. The clinic is next door to an Aldi store so we went in to see what they had in their centre aisles. Vince’s brother has picked up some good tools there before today but they rarely have the same stuff there all the time. I picked up a fire blanket which we’ll keep in the kitchen. When you want one nothing else will do really and it just might be needed one day. They had some nifty items, even trumpets and flutes although I can’t believe they’d be very good quality as they weren’t very expensive. We picked up a few TV dinners (frozen meals). These were cheaper than in our normal supermarket. We don’t have them often but we quite enjoy them and they can be handy when we don’t feel like cooking.

Why is it called a fire blanket?

I've never come across one but it sounds like a good idea. Hope it doesn't suddenly become useful.

@Fleura I think it might have a hook on it. I'll have to look. At the moment, it's on top of a little-used drawer very near the stove-top but we've both paid particular attention to where it is.

I'm hoping it can just stay in the drawer and get in the way when we want whatever is under it.

I don't have it, but I have the fire extinguisher at home in case of an accident.

That's a good idea too. It's good to have something that would help you put out a fire.

I was wondering what a fire blanket was too. Fleur explained it. I hope you never have to use it. I have extinguishers..I used one once.

@Fleura Lots of people here have small kitchen extinguishers. They don't need to be serviced..Some may not be good for multiple uses though

With fire extinguishers you are meant to have them serviced and recharged at regular intervals, so they are not usual in homes, only in businesses. Fire blankets though don't need any servicing.

We have both in the caravan but I doubt the extinguisher would work now. Or it might work but may not be very effective.

Would you believe I never heard of a fire blanket before? glad you were able to find it ay Aldi and it certainly seems like something to have handy but I hope and pray you never have to use it. Aldi does have some good bargains

@JudyEv even though I never heard of a fire blanket I do think it's self-explanatory. I have a small fire extinguisher close to my kitchen but I think a fire blanket is a good choice. Of course I hope neither of us ever needs to use them but better to be safe and prepared.

@Marilynda1225 We have one in the caravan too as well as a fire extinguisher. The latter could be out of date by now though.

I didn't think to explain what a fire blanket was. I just assumed everyone would know. I hope we never need it but at least it's readily accessible now.

As Fleur says, it's for putting out fires. Hopefully, we will never, ever need to use it but if a pan of fat catches alight we could throw the blanket over the pan and put the fire out.

I wouldn't have expected that either which is why I thought it was some kind of plant. What strange things to have in a grocery store.

@JudyEv As we hear more and more of cars that go on fire with no apparent reason. We thought to place one in the car, it can help if you do something immediately.

I have never had a fire blanket, I used to enjoy the lower prices at Aldi but they had deliver through Instacart and that got too expensive for me,

I try to avoid the Aldi isles with the 'special' items being offered. I do check out the kids section sometimes when they have pajamas, toys, and books, as I have grandchildren to get birthday and Christmas gifts for. Sometimes, I find something that's just perfect and the quality is very good. A friend told me the Aldi I go to most often had some really warm socks for women, so I went on a mission to search the isles for them when I was there a few weeks ago. And I did find some! They are so thick and warm, and they were not expensive. I call that a win.

@JudyEv A few years ago, a friend bought a portable icemaker at Aldi. The brand was unknown to me at the time. It works like a dream, she is very pleased with it.

I didn't think to explain fire blanket. It's a blanket you can place for example over a frypan of fat that's caught fire.

The other day I cooked fish wrapped in paper. It was a very simple recipe with cous cous, frozen green beans and frozen salmon wrapped in baking paper. However at the end one of the pieces of fish wasn't properly cooked, I think it was a bit too thick and also I had packed the parcels too closely together to fit them in one tray. So my partner put it back in the oven for a few minutes but he thought the quickest way to cook it would be to use the grill. Of course the result was that it set light to the paper!

@Fleura I didn't mind at all but I'm continually being astounded by what isn't 'common knowledge'. And then things I think may not be commonplace turn out to be. It's a bit like you just can't win sometimes.
