Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug said to be 80-100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin. The only drug stronger are the nitazenes. They have no medical use and are ten times more potent than fentanyl.
From 2018 to 2020 100,000 adults died of overdoses. Of that number 19,400(19%) were overdoses caused by fentanyl. These numbers continue to rise annually. Drug overdoses from synthetic opioids rose from 12,122 in 2015 to 53,495 in 2021.
This drug is now the leading cause of death among adults 18-45 in the U.S.
First responders use Narcan to help reverse the effects of a known or suspected overdose of opioids. It has become common to see public places such as schools and churches stock a supply of Narcan next to their basic first aid kits. It is important to note that though Narcan is helpful in these overdose cases sometimes it takes two doses and, it is still a powerful drug with side effects of its own.
