Yesterday, I was able to reconnect with an old friend. Their family is having a tough time the past months. Just like me, my friend is a stay at home mom with three kids. The eldest will be on college soon and the two on high school. But his husband needs to retire soon. My friend told me his husband cannot handle the stress of work and is always sickly. My friend is now looking for a job but being a stay at home mom for such a long time with a very few work experience and that was more than a decade ago, her application is always rejected. My friend told me she wants to apply for work abroad but same thing, she was asked for her work experience.
I really do not how to help her. I am sure it is tough especially that her competition will be younger than her and maybe with different set of skills. I told her maybe she can take some short courses to increase her qualifications.
Any suggestions on what advice to give to my friend? I'm lost also as I am not working as well.

I'm sorry it's so difficult to find work right now. Pretty has the same problem... She's never worked and everyone wants some work history to look at before hiring.
Good luck!

@rakski It's always a question asked in the US before someone is willing to hire, so I assumed it would be the same in the Philippines.

She should take up any job that comes her way.

Look into writing a resume that will list all her qualifications. Be honest about what you can do, and if there's a skill you don't think matters, include it. You might be surprised what results you get.

She can try internship to gain experience. In FVA for example. Or bootcamp to job placement.

@rakski I enrolled in FVA the course was online bookkeeping. I wasnt able to get the certificate though because I got bz with my day job. But they do offer internship without pay though. If youre good the client might hire you.

That is a tough one. I guess it also depends on what she wants to do. I used to be in the graphic design field, but so much has changed since I last worked (it's been 18 years now) . . . even my friends who were able to stay in the field say it's difficult now. Here there are trade schools and classes to help with adult careers . . . some offer job placement. But again, it depends on what she wants to do.

@rakski Are there places in her area where they have "hiring" signs? Here, a lot of places have such signs in their windows . . . maybe it would be good to talk to the manager/owner in person. I have been told a couple times they hired me because of my personality
. I do believe a resume/application does not tell everything about a person.

Can she sell food? Start with just snacks every afternoon. Or congree. Or breakfast food.

@merrybelle2021 I think she did that but unfortunately for her, her relatives live near them

@rakski I guess it depends on their neighborhood if it's allowed or not. I was referring to setting up a table in front of her house and selling to neighbors and people passing by.

You have given her the best advice you can as well as providing a listening ear.

A computer course or two would certainly help

It is sad that her husband can't support his family. Is he an older man? I worked well past retirement age.
She is in a difficult situation. Are there housekeeping services she could apply to?
