Another blast from the past

When our son first went to Ireland, like many young people, he didn’t have much money. He became a WOOFer. WOOF stand for ‘Willing Workers on Organic Farms’ although the farms aren’t always organic. Workers are given accommodation and meals in exchange for a certain amount of labour each day.
The system is open to a certain among of abuse but, in Scotland, he fitted in with the community very well and stayed in touch with some of them for quite some years. The croft where he stayed was in the very north-west and, as you can see, the land was quite rugged and harsh.
We were fortunate enough to spend several nights there and, on one of our hikes across to the coast, we came across two grinding stones on the site of an old mill.
The photo shows our son on the left, the daughter of the croft-owner and a Scottish deerhound which was tall enough to put his head on the table at mealtimes, although thankfully that was strongly discouraged.
EDIT: the acronym is actually WWOOF. Sorry about that.

@DWDavis Before we started house-sitting, I found a place where volunteers restore/rebuild old bikes which then go to Third World countries. If we run out of things to do, we might head there to help out. There is also a place that does the same with wheelchairs but at the moment they have a waiting list of volunteers. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding these places. I love stuff like that. You feel that you're useful, you meet all sorts of people and it fills in your time.

What a great photo and what a dog! Was it Ireland or Scotland though?

@JudyEv I see, thanks for clarifying. At my age, I am easily confused.

@JamesHxstatic And of course, at my age, I just think that, if I know what I'm talking about, doesn't everyone?

@JudyEv Oh wow, I wasn't aware of it - at least not around here as we don't have much "agriculture" locally. I want to find out more about it
! I wonder if deerhounds are related to greyhounds . . . similar body but with much more fur!

Gorgeous photo and narrative. I am in an envious froth over here right now. I read this to my hubby and we enjoyed it together. We really want to go to Scotland in a few years- IF we can afford it and IF we are in good enough shape. Thank you!

What a wonderful photo! Does your other son live in Ireland? I'm sure you've said, but I can't remember.

A great photo and great memories. I love the Scottish deerhound and Irish wolfhound. They are such huge dogs but so gentle. Have a good week.

I have said this before. Yet another example of dignity of labour.

Your son is the type to work hard and endure hardships !
I stop short of thinking of the dog as a sheep.

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy them. If we don't have an adventure, we'll have to create one. Do something stupid or whatever. It shouldn't be hard to organize!

@thislittlepennyearns Do you know - we bought some books in an Irish thrift store and they were all set in Ireland! Which for some reason really surprised me!!
