Another blast from the past

When our son first went to Ireland, like many young people, he didn’t have much money. He became a WOOFer. WOOF stand for ‘Willing Workers on Organic Farms’ although the farms aren’t always organic. Workers are given accommodation and meals in exchange for a certain amount of labour each day. The system is open to a certain among of abuse but, in Scotland, he fitted in with the community very well and stayed in touch with some of them for quite some years. The croft where he stayed was in the very north-west and, as you can see, the land was quite rugged and harsh. We were fortunate enough to spend several nights there and, on one of our hikes across to the coast, we came across two grinding stones on the site of an old mill. The photo shows our son on the left, the daughter of the croft-owner and a Scottish deerhound which was tall enough to put his head on the table at mealtimes, although thankfully that was strongly discouraged. EDIT: the acronym is actually WWOOF. Sorry about that.

I wonder if opportunities like the one your son enjoyed still exist, not that I could do such a thing these days. Still, it would be a great way for someone starting out as your son was then.

@JudyEv We have a sea turtle hospital about 90 minutes from here that is always looking for volunteers to help out during peak times. That might be something I could look into after I retire.

@DWDavis Before we started house-sitting, I found a place where volunteers restore/rebuild old bikes which then go to Third World countries. If we run out of things to do, we might head there to help out. There is also a place that does the same with wheelchairs but at the moment they have a waiting list of volunteers. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding these places. I love stuff like that. You feel that you're useful, you meet all sorts of people and it fills in your time.

What a great photo and what a dog! Was it Ireland or Scotland though?

@JudyEv I see, thanks for clarifying. At my age, I am easily confused.

@JamesHxstatic And of course, at my age, I just think that, if I know what I'm talking about, doesn't everyone?

This is Scotland. From there, we went across to Ireland and our son stayed there. He has never returned, except to visit. But it's okay really. The Irish wolfhound is very similar to the deerhound.

That'd be amazing if there was such a program here (possibly a partial solution for homelessness here??). I'm sure it wouldn't be easy, but oh the lessons in life a young one could learn. That is a large dog!!!

@JudyEv Oh wow, I wasn't aware of it - at least not around here as we don't have much "agriculture" locally. I want to find out more about it ! I wonder if deerhounds are related to greyhounds . . . similar body but with much more fur!

@much2say They are related to Irish wolfhounds and they certainly have the same body shape as greyhounds.

WWOOFing is available in the US. There is a website about it. I'm sure the experience was good for our son in an overall sense. And yes, that's a very large dog!!

Love that photo. The dog reminds me of the Irish wolfhound said to be the tallest of breeds, I've only seen 2 so far when I worked in a vets office.

I agree with you. Many of the shepherd breeds have similarities that makes it hard to distinguish between them if you have an untrained eye, I often mistake the Malinois with the German shepherd and the poodle with the maltese

I think the two breeds are quite similar in many ways. They possibly come from the same Celtic ancestry.

@rebelann Same with the horse breeds and of course there are many more crossbreds in the horse world. And with AI being so obtainable now (if you have the money) we are seeing breeds that we've never seen before.

Gorgeous photo and narrative. I am in an envious froth over here right now. I read this to my hubby and we enjoyed it together. We really want to go to Scotland in a few years- IF we can afford it and IF we are in good enough shape. Thank you!

You are right of course although I hadn't really thought about the term before but it's very apt - dignity of labour. I like it. And there is the Biblical quote about a labourer being worthy of his hire.
