Power Outage Anyone?

As I was getting ready to get off the computer, it shut down without my doing anything. Yes, power outage. It lasted a couple of hours. I managed to use my phone to upload a new image on my profile. However, I uploaded a new one when I got back here just now. Life got a little interesting with the power out. I think it's time I got myself emergency ready. I have many oil lamps, no oil. They're mostly for decoration, but I have used them in the past. I need to buy oil. I also need a flashlight. I don't have one of those, either. When the power went out, I thought it was only the Internet. I still had light in the kitchen. However, that didn't last. I checked the hallway. All the lights in my end of the hall were out. As I walked down the hallway, some were on. Then, they all went out. I went to talk with my friend to find out if she had power, but no, no one did. The 'fun' didn't stop there. Soon the fire department and ambulance showed up. I went out in the hallway to get nosy. There were quite a few people standing around talking. It turned out the fire department showed up because one of the carbon monoxide alarms was going off. No doubt because we didn't have power. The ambulance did take someone to the ER, but I don't know who. I only know it was on the first floor, which was lucky as the elevators didn't work with the power out. It would have been an interesting climb to the upper floors with the stretcher otherwise. Since the power came back on, I watched the last half of the Harry Potter movie I started yesterday, and an episode of Smallville. Now, I'm here, but not for long. My back is complaining painfully. Oh and the two to six inches we were predicted - we got 4.5 inches of snow. It's still snowing. But it's coming to an end. I thought I might go to the pool this week, but not this week. We have more storms coming our way along with icy roads. Though I don't know how much snow we'll get with the next storm. That one seems to affect more of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. I don't think it will reach here. Thankfully, there won't be any more rain. Have you been affected by the storms across the US today? Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me. The bush outside my bedroom window. I tried to show how deep the snow is.

Such power Cuts in cold weather can be very difficult. We have elaborate power backup systems here, especially in the Apartment complexes. Earlier they operated on Diesel which was noisy and caused more pollution. Now they are gradually getting shifted to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). The Snow is quite deep !

@just4him Yes if it melts too much, it would become slippery!

Yes, they can be. I'm glad it doesn't happen often. This was the first one I've had in several years. It's good they are switching to natural gas. Yes, it is deep.

@just4him Having a power outage is bad but during the winter is really hard. I am glad we have mild winters here in Jerusalem bu we have had our electricity go out in winter and it was very cold even if it is for two hours.

It's bad, but it wasn't too bad yesterday. I'm glad your winters are mild.

@Hannihar It was more inconvenient than anything. It wasn't out long enough for the apartment to get cold, and I didn't need a flashlight or oil in my lamps to have light.

@just4him During Corona our winters have been very mild but before it we had our months where it was cold and also we have gotten snow. I am sorry about the outage being bad but that it wasn't too bad for you yesterday.

Haven't had any real power outages recently, but my internet did go out yesterday for a while and the printer was hassling me when I tried to print out a pdf tax receipt.

@just4him It would only print every third or fourth line from the pdf so I ended up taking a screen shot of it and printing from that, but some of the lines were a bit faint.

I can see that you do have deep snow there. We had a bit of snow yesterday, but more freezing rain than snow. Today is a home day for my hubby because the roads are unpassable.

It's a good thing he's retired and can stay home when the weather makes roads impassable.

That's one of the reasons I don't like snow. We do have a generator up north, however. Hope your power returns soon. We had our first major snow of the winter in CT with about 3-4 inches. Everything seems to be working fine.

@DianneN No. I tried to upload a picture on the phone, but I got rid of that one as soon as I got back on the computer. It's a nice picture, but it cuts off my face.

@just4him thank you, but I think we got at least 2 or 3 inches last night. Seemed pretty deep when I took Eli to school this morning. Then we got some just a bit ago. But once again it is now sunny and the new snow all melted (where the manager cleaned off before the new snow). Yes, hope they are...always scary to see someone being taken off in an ambulance.

I only prepare for candles if there is power outage. What I don't prepared is if the power outage longs for days and my water supplied drain off. That is a big matter for me

According to my lease, I can't use candles. I have a few of them, but I don't use them. I'm sure losing power for longer periods would cause drainage on many things.

I like your new avatar. At least buy a couple of flashlights. If you lived closer, I'd give you a couple of rechargeable ones. I have several of them and keep one in each room. The flashlight in the kitchen is a work-light with magnets on it so it can be used while working on a vehicle. It's on our metal paper towel holder above the kitchen sink.

@just4him Around Christmas, Walmart sells rechargeable flashlights for $10 each... I've had mine for five or more years and they're still good.

I sometimes get myself 'emergency ready' but then the power doesn't go off again for ages and in the meantime the torch seems to get mislaid! lol

We rarely have power outrages here. We have an inverter here which at least can be used uninterrupted for the tube lights and fans for 6 hours.

Sorry that you lost your power. It's good to know what you need to be prepared for next time. We got some rain this afternoon, not bad storms or anything though. Thinking about all those who did get the violent storms.

We rarely have power outages here.We can have a very short power outage in about three or four years, or there is a circuit check. The government will notify the power outage in advance
