Mom was the 17th of seventeen cousins. All have passed except four (all in their 80s and 90s). The oldest of them all passed this past Valentine's Day.
Today, I received a text from the daughter of the youngest surviving cousin. She (Mom's cousin) turns 84 tomorrow and had to be admitted to the hospital today. Mom's cousin has leukemia. This hospital stay will determine which type of leukemia and how far advanced it is.
Don't you hate it when you (or someone you love) have a bad news birthday?

It does bother me when my relatives get bad news on their birthday.

@Chellezhere That is true since being born on the day of a tragic event can take a toll on all of us.

@Deepizzaguy Do you remember the 1985 MOVE bombing in Philadelphia? That was a rough day for me, as I lived a few miles from where it occurred, too.

I feel for one of my dad's first cousins. She was born on 9/11, albeit many years before the attack, but you know that had to be a horrible birthday for her (as it was a terrible day for most of us).

Yeah, can't think of anytime that has happened recently...although my uncle who will turn 80 in May is not in very good shape. Luckily he was approved for a medication that might buy him some time though. Even though I haven't seen much of him in recent years, I love my uncle and it sucks he is sick...

@Chellezhere Thanks, but he has terminal cancer. I am sure any improvement will be short lived.

I am sorry to hear that your uncle is sick. I hope the medication works for him and he feels better soon.

@snowy22315 I am sorry to hear that, and understand. I am not looking forward to the day I find out my baby brother (who has lung cancer) passes.

@Chellezhere Interesting. How to explain that we have don't touch ornamental birds?

Yes, they did. Four spent most of their lives in Florida, while the others were home in Pennsylvania, but whenever they got together, it was fun. They were all born between 1928 to 1946. Times were simpler and more innocent during their childhoods.

@sallypup My sister-in-law is from Romania. Her best friend immigrated to the States, too. One day, she served duck for dinner. When asked where she got it, she said she laid out breadcrumbs from the lake (actually a retention pond) into her garage, and waited. As soon as the duck came in, she grabbed it, and the rest was history.
My brother and his wife had to explain that is not something we do here, and the difference between a retention pond and a lake.

I hate to have bad news associated with any special occasion. It makes things memorable in a negative way.

So sorry to hear this. That is the one thing I could never understand in life. When a person gets that old and winds up with a bad disease. I want to know WHY but I know there is always some kind of reason, I will put her in my prayers,

That's a shame that your Mom's cousin got such bad news on her birthday. I hope she is better.
