The Great Googly Moogly

At horse endurance rides, some breeds are more popular than others. The Arab (Arabian) is the most competitive as they have been bred for centuries to survive very tough desert conditions. The other breed that is becoming more and more popular is the standardbred. These are very tough too and usually have a much calmer temperament which suits many riders better. With registered standardbreds, a particular name may not be used again for a certain number of years. I think breeders must become exasperated trying to come up with acceptable names and so, in the endurance world, there are standardbreds with names such as Great Googly Moogly, Too Busy Talking, Done and Dusted, Fourteen Red and What Another Fella. To me, these are very strange names. I’m sure they all have simpler stable names as well. The two horses in the photo are both standardbreds. The one in the foreground competes under his stable name of Mac and the horse on the right is Great Googly Moogly. Can you see the white brand on Mac’s neck?

Registries here are like that, too. One of my brothers raised horses and was always complaining that he couldn't come up with new names.

@JudyEv I think my brother said they were sending three at a time but that was several years ago so I may be misremembering it.

@DaddyEvil Perhaps every registry is different.

They have to send x names at a time to the registry - something like 6 or maybe 10 and sometimes they all get rejected and they have to come up with new ones.

@RebeccasFarm I'd have an excuse then to put up a collage of Arabs.

There are a lot of other funny ones too. And the purebred Arabs have some really weird names - difficult to spell and impossible to pronounce. Maybe I'll do another discussion on them one day.

It's the same with most registries. I had to pick 3 names on George's application to send it in

I know some send in several lists of names before one is accepted.

It's the same with dog breeds. There are some really wild registered names out there. One of my Norwegian Elkhounds was named Oslo's Silver Blizzard; and we called him Ozzie.

The fancy names are always nice for exhibition or whatever but pets need a short name as well.

I wonder if they call him Great for short? Anyway, I got curious about endurance rides in the US, and although it doesn't seem to be as popular here as there. There is a big one held in this state. (Virginia) Also, California and Arizona have them apparently. Virginia's was the only one I saw listed for the East, but this is kind of a horsey state especially in the Western parts. Certain counties or areas have a lot of horse farms.

The be-all and end-all for endurance riders would be to ride in the Tevis Cup which is held in California. There will be two held in Ireland while we're there and I thought maybe we could take photos but they're on the weekends and would take time away from our weekends with Damian. It would only be for interest' sake.

It’s my understanding (I don’t study this but I can’t help but hear it because of the horse industry here in Kentucky) that horse names are kept in a registry or database, and you cannot use a name in a “professional” setting (e.g., racing) that’s been used before. So none of those horses will be named Secretariat. I am glad Great Googly Moogly wasn’t taken before. Yes, I see the brand on Mac.

Your understanding is quite right. I think after x number of years a name can be used again but not a famous one like Secretariat or Phar Lap.

Those are pretty funny names but quite catchy. Who would forget a horse named Great Googly Moogly I'm always intrigued by the names of horses especially here when we have our annual Kentucky Derby. Some of the names of the horses are quite unique.

You would always hope that a great champion would have a nice name as well rather than an odd one.

That's true although most riders try to get them to trot rather than pace.

Thinking about it, a horse needs a good name and Googly Moogly is one of those!

I'm not sure it would look good in the record books but this one didn't make the grade as a trotter.
