Do you like this bike? It is a Raleigh bike with Dunlop roadstar gold seal tyres, mudguard splasher and Sturmey Archer gear system – just in case you’re interested.
It was sold in 1901 by Fitzgerald’s on St Stephen’s Green, Dublin to a Bernard Matthews. Bernard used it every working day until 1948. He carried all his children on it; one on the back, one on the crossbar and one on the cute wicker basket on the handlebars.
The bike is now enjoying a life of leisure at the Museum of Country Life at Turlough Park House in Co. Mayo, Ireland.

Here, many people use that wicket basket on the handlebar, especially the street hawkers and the newspaper delivery boys. They use the basket to carry their stuff.
The other day I saw one roadside construction worker with similar kind of bike. His wife was on the backseat, elder son on handlebar and a little toddler girl in the basket. It was very early in the morning before sunrise and luckily no traffic. Else it would not be safe.

@arunima25 They have hire E-bikes in Castlebar where our son lives. You have to download an app but you can pick the bikes up and then leave them just about anywhere but they don't seem to have helmets with them. Helmets are compulsory in our country too.

@JudyEv I noticed that. That's a thoughtful design. Here people do that in off hours where traffic police is not around. Else there is a huge fine if there are more than two people on the bike and if you are without helmet.

@JudyEv Yes it wasn't the same shape but the same kind. I took him on it for long rides in England

It's an interesting story to go with the bike. Did they let you take Vince out for a test drive on it?

I don't know... That seat doesn't look too comfortable, and having ridden on the crossbar of my brother's bike, I can tell you that isn't very comfortable, either.

You could well be right. I've only sat behind the rider and that was bad enough.

I can't imagine carrying three children on this bike. It would have made me nervous!

What a smart design. Cannot imagine this bike could carry so many children.

That's what I thought. I hadn't seen one quite like it before.
