Dressing for the weather

The photo is of part of the drawing room at Kylemore Abbey and has nothing to do with the post. We’re on holiday in Ireland and, in our apartment, most rooms have radiators. These are virtually unknown in Australia as we rarely need such heating. Mostly our heating comes from reverse cycle air-conditioners or gas/electric heaters. We are snug and warm inside but it can be hard to gauge the right clothing to wear when we go out. We have a tiny balcony so now we look out to see what everyone is wearing and judge our clothing by that. Are they hurrying along with their collars up or are some brave souls wearing T-shirts? It’s proved to be a pretty reliable guide.

I love the picture of the drawing room. Those chairs certainly are unique. Dressing for the weather can be a challenge. Even listening to the forecast this morning I wasn't sure how to dress. I like your idea of seeing what people are wearing as they hurry along outside your balcony.

It's so warm inside you can really get caught if you're not careful.

That doesn't always work because there's always one or two who are inappropriately dressed. I look outside and it's a nice sunny day today, but it's only 6°C/43°F. I may wear my winter parka to sweep up all the fallen tree blossoms.

Just because the sun is out doesn't mean that it's going to be warm. That always seems strange to me.

@JudyEv After doing the sweeping up, I felt almost hot, so I changed the parka for a lighter jacket to sit out and read. But I soon got cold and came in to get my parka again. I sat out for half an hour before it all clouded up again and got colder.

That can’t always be reputable. We have people around here in shorts when it’s 30 degrees (-1C), and people in coats when it’s 80. And someone might be saying, “Hey, wanna play a trick on the Aussie tourists? Let’s pretend it’s warm!” I love the photo of the drawing room.

We take an average of a heap of people. Our son, when he first went to Ireland, used to say that, at the first hint of a sunny day, people would be out in their shorts and T-shirts - and covered in goosebumps.

It worked quite well. There were some hardy souls with less clothing but if we went with the majority we got it about right.

@JudyEv There is always one at least that you can't go by. I have a cousin that wears shorts in the middle of winter

@wolfgirl569 Some men in our part of the world wear shorts all the time. They must be very unfeeling! lol

Here, it's warmer outside than inside at the moment

@JudyEv We don't have the heating on so if we get cold sitting at desks we just have to go and do something more active!

@Fleura My mum would always go out and do some digging or else sweep the big verandah. :)

When I go out, I always check the Observatory's website for information on weather.

That's a good idea too. I often check the weather on the computer.

My parents had radiators in their home all of my childhood. They replaced them about 15 years ago with a forced hot air system like I have. I love the chairs in the photo wow so beautiful and the red one in the back!

When we went to Dublin yesterday, we saw similar chairs and in the same colour.

I remember seeing radiators in the quarters we lived in when dad was stationed in Germany. I only remember when I touched it after it'd been turned on it was hot and I pulled away .... I was 6 or 7 at the time.

Cute little lovely room now that is. Doll chairs. Are you cold there Judy? How is the weather, changing I guess.

It looks like dolls' house furniture, doesn't it? It's been cold but we have had some nice days as well although even the sunny days are still pretty chilly.

The thermometer this morning showed 52F/11C, so Pretty and I both put on jackets and then realized it felt much warmer than that when we actually stepped outside. I usually look at the temp on my phone and dress according to what it shows...

That’s a beautiful room. It’s hard to know what to wear here. A week ago it was hot and now it’s cold.

It's only the last few years I've divided up summer and winter clothes. There didn't seem to be so much difference before.

@JudyEv I’ve always packed away winter clothes in summer and vise versa but I don’t know about this year.

That's a lovely room. It's been rainy and chilly here. Before that we had several chilly but sunny days.
