How’s this for a place setting?

This place setting is in the dining room in Kylemore Castle. I don’t know who had the plates inscribed. Maybe it’s for the tourists as the plate in the photo has birth and death dates on it and the Henrys were long gone by 1904. There is another plate which states that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s 7th child, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, visited in 1887. When the Henrys owned the house, guests were given a buttonhole of violets to wear to dinner. Violets were a craze in Victorian London and represented loyalty and friendship. Notice the number of glasses on the table and imagine having a drink from all of those. You'd be on your ear in no time. Do you know that phrase - on your ear?

No, I've never heard or read that phrase before. It is interesting, though. I would have to watch someone else while they're eating to know what each piece is for...

@QuantumJoy I'm glad I'm just a farm boy. Unless you really messed up at the dinner table, mom wouldn't make you leave the table until you were full.

@QuantumJoy I won't go quite that far, but a sandwich in my hand is just as good.

I'm supposing one of them is for water... and I don't count the finger bowl.

The table was very colourful but as someone pointed out there isn't enough cutlery for more than one or two courses.

You certainly had to be rich to afford all that table wear!

@Ronrybs It blows my mind to have a room purely and simply for crockery.

I had a photo of the plan of that area but it isn't very clear at all. But I remember there were separate rooms for cutlery and crockery storage.

@JudyEv Probably a couple of huge rooms, judging by the amount on show!

I looked it up online but I couldn't find a right answer. Perhaps this phrase is something new.

I couldn't find 'on your ear' either but it's a saying from when I was a child, mostly meaning to throw someone out 'on their ear' if they didn't behave.

On your ear isn't one that I have heard in the past. I suppose it has the same meaning as tipsy. That is quite the place setting there, lots to drink and eat from, alot of red.

@JudyEv Actually when I think about it, there are a few sayings regarding body parts isn't there? Getting the boot, pain in the a$$, giving someone the finger, ripping someone a new one.....quite a list and I am sure that there are more. That would be a fun post.

It looks very lavish for sure. I couldn't find 'on your ear' online either but it always meant tipsy to us or it might be used as a threat.

I never heard the phrase and there are too many glasses on that table, may be it is just for the exhibition.

@JudyEv You are right, not enough cutlery, but most people do not notice.
