Finally blooming

I have quite a few different iris. It seems their bloom is a little late this year.
This lavender and gold color is the one I have the most of, but there are plenty more.
A friend shared some, my daughter has shared some. The are easy to grow and very much low maintenance. They grow from a rhizome. That is not quite like a bulb but it is a fleshy part that grows under ground, or actually right at the surface.
Every few years iris need to be dug up, divided and the rhizomes cleaned up to keep the iris beds fertile and productive.
Taking care of plants is a favorite thing for me. How about you?

We were alternating 50's and 80's and I figured that slowed many things down.

Are iris common where you are? I really do not mind the mowing.

I haven't grown iris in years. They're pretty but not some of my favorite flowers.
Did you know that lavender and gold is their original color? And the other colors can revert back to it if the rhizome gets traumatized too much? I bought some black iris and accidentally hit the rhizome with a hoe when I was digging it up to move it. It bloomed lavender and gold after that.

I did not know that. Probably why I have so many. My younger sister always talked about "species iris" which I guess are wild ancestors. They were smaller, less showy and usually pale yellow or purple.

@GardenGerty Your sister is right... We had some wild iris growing in one of our pastures. They had very small petals and were a dark purple. Pretty enough but not showy like the tame iris.

I love the coloring. My dad’s wife would love to have a conversation with you about taking care of plants. My dad has to come out and remind her to take a break so she won’t exhaust herself. She’s got my dad obsessed about making this one plant inside the house grow. Yes, an indoor plant. She put him “in charge” of it, and it’s flourished. It’s gotten so tall, and he’s so proud. It’s comical, and sweet. You and your husband would just hit it off with my dad and Diana.

My experience with where you live is that it is usually hot and dry. Trees would be welcome and a necessity.

No, I'm not a plant nurturer. We are getting our front weed bed landscaped; and I'm hoping it will be low maintenance. Love the iris. Hope you have a good weekend.

I have a few of these irises planted in my yard. My mother planted them years ago.
