Are we feeding the right cat?

Our neighbours have gone away for a few days and asked us to feed their cat, Alfie. They have only asked us once before and that was about four years ago. They are pleasant enough but we’re not exactly bosom pals so we never go to their house and the cat is quite shy so we don’t see it around, we have two other cats (at least) that regularly visit our garden – and we don’t know where they come from!
We called in last weekend and the neighbour showed us where the food was kept and explained what and how much to give. The cat wasn’t there.
Thursday was the first day they were away so Little One and I dutifully went to their house, let ourselves in and prepared the food. Then the cat actually came in through the cat flap and seemed pleased to have his dinner. We were glad he came in while we were there, but then we started to wonder, was it the right cat? Because any cat could come in through the cat flap and if Alfie was rather shy, as we know he is, a more dominant cat might steal his food.
We looked at him doubtfully; was it Alfie?
‘I thought they had a ginger cat’ I said.
Little One replied ‘I thought he was grey!’
Luckily he was wearing a collar, with a name tag, and I managed to get close enough to actually get hold of it and read it. And yes it clearly said ‘Alfie’, so we were reassured.
Just goes to show how unreliable memory can be I guess!

It's understandable that you might feel that way. At least this was the right cat.

I am glad you fed the right cat. At least Alfie let himself be seen.

i know how you feel since some of the stray cats that come to my home to be fed by my relatives, some of the stray cats have a facial resemblance to a cat who lives my with my relatives that looks like my female cat Munster Cheese.

Looks like you had a case of cat-astrophic identity confusion! Good thing you checked the collar, otherwise, you might have ended up feeding the wrong cat and causing a feline feud between neighbors. Who knew being a cat-sitter could be so suspenseful? :D :D

That is hilarious, but I understand your sudden bout of fear. You certainly don't want the right cat to go hungry! I'm glad to hear you figured it out. I'm nervous when my neighbor asks me to do something for them while they are gone because I'm afraid whatever it is, I'll mess it up.

It would have been funnier if the name tag read "Tom" on it, though. How would you keep somebody else's cat out of their cat's food?
