A community garden AND a little library

I’ve just come back from a walk to the community garden. There is a 'little library' there and I donated a few books. We often pick up a book or two from there when we go for a walk. It's all free - you can take books or leave books. The garden has a few raised beds which individuals can rent to grow whatever they like. There is also a community bed which has mostly herbs which anyone can pick if they want to. As with most such things, it’s open to abuse and a well-dressed woman driving a very smart car was caught digging up a curry tree from one of the rented beds. It’s such a shame that people always want something for nothing and don’t care who they steal from. And did you notice how blue our sky is this morning?

A community garden always sounds nice but people take advantage so I wouldn't be wiling to plant anything in one. I would LOVE to find one of the small libraries here. I have a ton of paper/ink books packed in our garage in totes since we don't have the room to keep them in the house. As we packed my books in the totes, I copied the title/author and then got them in ebook form and they're all on my phone. I use the Kindle app and store my ebooks in the Kindle Cloud. Kindle has always been a good app/system. I enjoy reading my books with it. I just added two new books to my Kindle Cloud yesterday.

@DaddyEvil What's stopping you from putting up your own little library?

@JudyEv I prefer the feel of real books but we don't have room for them in this house. I'd rather have them but can't... At least I can still read them as ebooks.

I sort of like the feel of a real book but to each his own. There are a lot of little libraries around and a lot of community gardens too.

Did anyone confront her? Or was this something caught on camera, after the fact? The picture is beautiful. It looks like the perfect place to be.

Yes, the owner of the bed confronted her and shamed her in front of her family and some others that were there. Perhaps it will deter her from doing more of the same.

What a shame, and she was well-dressed and driving a fancy car. Who says the rich are not thieves? The concept of your community garden is so wonderful. Imagine being generous enough to leave goods for others and then take only what you need. I hope more communities would adopt this practice/concept.

You can find these in quite a few of our towns. There is a big one in our capital. It's a great idea.

The pretty blue sky was one of the first things that I noticed when I saw the picture. That and the scarecrow. Maybe they should make a scarecrow to chase off the rich 2-legged thieves, there is no need for that.

@JudyEv Or putting up motion sensor water sprayers. Imagine how effective those would be.

@JudyEv Raised beds are a great idea for those of us with bending difficulties. The spirit of a community garden is wonderful - if only everyone played the game right.

They are quite common here. Lots of towns have them in one form or another.

Those brick garden surrounds are lovely. I wish the world in general would get going on having community gardens. Every church should have a public food garden.

@JudyEv The sun did come out eventually, but it didn't do much to warm things up. We even got frost overnight (I can see it on car roofs across the street this Thursday morning).

@BarBaraPrz We will be in the caravan tomorrow night, without power and in a cold part of the country. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a frost there.

You have a beautiful blue sky, after months of beautiful weather we are having a horrible month of May. Those raised beds are so good, I am very tempted to ask to the gardener to install them in our vegetable garden.

@JudyEv A smorgasbord for the roos. The reason why I did nothing is because of the quantity of soil needed to fill them.

We had them in Donnybrook. It does take a lot of soil to fill them. That's about the only downside and the kangaroos thought they had a smorgasbord.

What a nice idea! Yes, people will steal plants off porches without a second thought. It's a shame that someone would dig up a tree.

Very beautiful blue sky. Some people can be so selfish. We also have a small community library here. We can donate books to the library but cannot take any books for free. We have to borrow the books and return them to the library.

The library in the clubhouse is like that but with the other one you can take books if you want to. It must work reasonably well as there are always plenty of books to choose from.
