About Drugs

Prescription drugs that is. Do you pay attention to that folded piece of paper you may find in the container holding your prescription meds? Usually it tells you all about the drug you are using - then the possible adverse effects are listed. Recently l was reading an article about a breakthrough weight loss medication which should be available later this year. From all indications - trials etc it is expected to be hugely succesfull - but then the last page of the article listed the adverse effects - from moderate to very serious. When we have certain illnesses there are medications that we must take to feel better and save our lives, but there are some conditions where alternative measures can be used. If you take prescription drugs have you noticed any adverse effects? Do you pay any attention to what is written about side effects?

Yes I have one medication that gives me bad side effects, but I have no choice to take it some times. I do have alternative medicine now and again though.

Some medications must be taken. Of course if the side effects become too uncomfortable, the doctor could prescribe another brand.

I usually consult a doctor before taking any medicine and I haven't taken any weight loss medicine ever.

@Kandae11 It's the same for me. I lead a routined life and have my own diet that keeps me healthy.

I have always browsed for information as the leaflet sometimes is not readable If the side effects are dangerous I get back to my doctor and sort out the issue .

I always read the folded flyer that comes with the medications but I also search online to see if people warn about more serious side effects. The doctor prescribed a medication to my husband to lower his cholesterol (I was against, his cholesterol is genetic). He took one pill and after a few hours his blood pressure dropped so low that he fainted in the living room. I threw the rest of the pills.

I had a problem with high cholesterol and l was using Simvastatin on and off because l read that statins could cause other problems. Then my doctor asked me if l preferred to have a stroke. Anyway l stopped eating or drinking anything that was high in cholesterol and l finally got rid of it. My blood test a couple months ago was normal.

One of my friends, when he was taking medicine for stomach ulcer, he started gaining weight. And now he has to face this challenge of obesity. Almost all allopathic medicines have adverse effects.

@Kandae11 Homeopathic medicines exist; however, their efficacy is not significant.

I do read as much of the wording as I can. I like to know about any side effects and ingredients before I take.

If no side effects - fine, but if anything unusual happens you will know where to possibly lay blame.

Every medicine can have some really bad side effects sadly. I always read the information on new medicines I take but after that I don’t read it for updates etc

Pretty always looks up new-to-us medications and reads the adverse side effects just in case we start having any problems after we start taking them. She's called our doctor before and had one medication changed because I started having problems...

Usually I read about the side effects but I think they feel obliged to put in every little thing. You end up thinking you shouldn't be taking the medication at all.

I agree, they feel obliged even though the majority might not be affected adversely.

I only take medication prescribed by my doctors, but I have had a few adverse reactions and had medications changed for those reasons.

I read the prescription first before taking the medicine. I observe myself if there are side effects for me after taking the meds. Gladfully, Not.

I pay attention to side effects, but I am shocked by how often the side effects are not told to me. One prescription medication of mine comes to mind in particular; it did not come with a tiny piece of paper listing side effects, and the bottle only listed two. There was a big one not listed: weight gain. My doctor neglected to mention that, and I gained 50 pounds before I convinced my doctor to take me off of it (this was about 2 years ago). I was very upset she had not warned me. I never would have taken the very first pill, because there were definitely other options. It took me forever to get any of that weight back off.
