My Son Lost All His Teeth to a Bone Disease

My son Chad is 51 years old. This month, he lost all his teeth to a hereditary bone disease. My father had the exact same thing happen, at around the same age. Chad has kept up on his dental cleanings and regularly performed good oral hygiene. He went to three different dentists, to get a second & third opinion. Nope, they all gave the same exact diagnoses. Am I upset about this? At first I was, because I thought he possibly got this disease from a poor childhood diet. Physically, Chad is as healthy as a horse, in every other respect. No, a faulty diet did not cause Chad to lose all his permanent teeth. There was nothing wrong with Chad's teeth, the bone structure that was holding them in place is diseased. Now, Chad has temporary dental plates, until his gums are no longer swollen. Then, they can take an accurate impression, to make him some sturdy dentures. Photo:No, this is not my son posing! The bone was deteriorating, beneath his teeth. They were becoming loose and had to be pulled.

Chad lost about ten pounds, he was having a hard time eating for a while. With the temporary dentures, he's doing much better, thanks Marie:)

That’s a shame. I hope he has insurance to cover this?

@kobesbuddy No way, not at all. Your son was a victim of this. I was hoping he had insurance because my brother-in-law DOES have dental insurance, and he's still on the hook for $15,000. Due to medication he was on constantly as a child, his jaw bone deteriorated. Something related to that caused him to lose his top teeth, and he needs partial dentures along with a cadaver bone in his jaw. I started thinking I hope Kharla's son has dental insurance. It's just not fair that he has no control, so he really shouldn't foot the whole bill.

@AmbiePam Through Kristine's employment(she's a school teacher), they both have dental coverage. How much is covered? I'm sure it will be very expensive.

I'm sure this has been expensive, it's not a choice they chose to make.

Oh dear, that's a shame. Still it isn't the end of the world and it seems there isn't anything he could have done differently. Hopefully he will be more comfortable with replacements. I hope the bone disease is not affecting other parts of the body?

@kobesbuddy Has it just occurred spontaneously, or as a side-effect of some other treatment?

I don't understand how this disease only affects the bone, that holds Chad's teeth in. Osteoporosis affects the entire skeletal structure. It isn't confined to one group of bones.

My own father had degenerative bone disease in his jaw. He lost all of his teeth in his 40's, all during a 2 month period, and had to get false teeth. That was in the late 70's. He, too, took excellent care of his teeth and did regular dental checkups, etc. to no avail, and was told that any children he had more than likely would go through that as well. I have had to have a lot of dental work done, and I also took great care of my teeth, so evidently this is a real thing. My son who was in the bad accident, had been in the middle of some extensive dental work when the wreck took place. Since then, with all of the other surgeries, etc. he had to have, there have been endless trips to a dental specialist to try to salvage some of his teeth. Finally, the top ones are replaced, the insurance paid for him to have implants. Now it's the bottom ones and more endless visits and pain. He always took excellent care of his teeth--but it ended up not helping much at all. My oldest girl has had many problems and hers are being worked on as well. My youngest, so far so good, but she is still young. She is absolutely trying hard to keep hers as healthy as she can. The only one of my 4 that has fantastic teeth is my son that was adopted. I am sorry Chad has to go through this. I know it is hard, painful, and expensive.

Even with good dental coverage, it is costing up in the thousands to be taken care of! Chad seems to be doing better, even though his permanent teeth are gone:(

OH NO! I am so sorry for Chad. If the problem was genetic I understand that there was nothing the dentists could do for him. I hope he will be fine once he gets his dentures.

I'm so sorry your son had this bone disease. Does taking out his teeth cure the bone disease?

I'm sorry to hear about Chad's experience with his teeth. It must have been difficult for him to lose all his teeth due to a hereditary bone disease. It's reassuring to know that he took proactive steps by seeking multiple opinions from different dentists. It's understandable that you initially wondered if his childhood diet may have played a role, but it's clear that the cause lies within the bone structure rather than his oral hygiene or diet. Fortunately, Chad now has temporary dental plates to provide some functionality while his gums heal. Once the swelling subsides, he can have accurate impressions taken to create sturdy dentures. It's important to focus on the positive side of things, such as Chad's overall physical health, and the fact that there are solutions available to restore his ability to chew and smile comfortably. Supporting Chad during this process and providing him with the necessary care will be crucial. It's always challenging to face unexpected health issues, but with time and the right dental treatment, Chad can regain his confidence and oral function.

Sorry, he has to go through these troubles and I hope the dentures will be fine for him. Hey, when things like this happen there is a good side at least he won't have wooden dentures like George Washington did,
