Choosing a seat on a plane

My package holidays saw me getting in and out of several planes. It is not always that I got my favourite seat and that is the window seat and the only disadvantage being to get up and go past the others sitting in that row. I have always liked to take a walk to avoid stiffness and I am not sure how happy those sitting in that row would have felt when I disturbed them so.
To avoid turbulence the recommendation is to take the wings or front of the plane but never the tail end. I did have a bad experience while seated in a small plane that took us from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon. With the Colorado river running below it was surely not a happy memory!!
How often have you travelled by plane and what has been your choice?

We were frequent flyers, for the International flights we were allowed to choose our seats before the others. We always choose the two seats in front of the security exits, no one in front of us, much more space to stretch our legs, on the wing. We were often "upgraded" to business class, and it was very pleasant there.
We have travelled by plane during 35 years, many flights every year.

I know those seats where you get plenty of leg room. What criteria that you got this privilege. Was it just frequent travel?

@LadyDuck Where I have travelled there was no issue of passengers not understanding English. Most all are educated.

@allknowing One of the criteria was that you had to understand English perfectly. Another you had to be healthy enough to be able to open the safety door and help the other passengers in case of accident. We booked our flight with a lot time in advance, we had the choice and they know us at the airline counter, only one time we were unable to have those seats.

Well, sitting near the tail end may be bumpier, but it is the safest place to be in the plane in case of a crash. However, I have never flown in a small airplane such as you have, so I will listen to your advice!
The last time I flew I remember I had the aisle seat, which I did not mind. My sister had the middle seat. I was just glad I didn’t have to climb over someone to get to the bathroom.

But the joy of sitting in a window seat at the cost of troubling others is worth it (lol)

I remember the person in the window seat. He was a gangly teenager who couldn’t still, and willingly gobbled down our airplane food when we declined to try it ourselves.

@AmbiePam He proved that he was a teenager after all. Never heard of anyone eating someone else's food. (lol)

I’ve been on a plane about 10 times. It was always a military flight except for one time and they were all pleasant experiences.

One vacation I took a night flight, thinking I could sleep and be ready to go the next day. Very foolish idea. The first day of my vacation was not so good due to me feeling groggy. I admire that you can walk up and down on a plane. There are so many people all crammed together. I just sit and feel like a sardine in its can.

Not that I do it many times but for long hours in a plane that is recommended.
Sad you created a bad memory

I have not traveled in ages.
The last time I flew on a plane was in 1989 and I went back to the States to make some money but I was there way too long so I was afraid I would never get back so I asked my G-d to bring me back Home and I would not leave. He brought me Home and I do not leave. I would like the window seat so can look down on how small the cars and people and see the scenery. If I want to see something I will go visit it here in Israel.

Good you were able to get back and yes you can still fly from Israel. I too have liked a window seat.

Thank you and I choose not to leave Israel because I really do not have any place outside of here that I want to visit.

I traveled a lot when I was working, both for business and leisure. I prefer aisle seat. It's more convenient to go to the rest room, and I liked to talk along the aisle once in a while to avoid stiffness and swelling.

The problem with the isle seat is when those in that row want to also visit the rest room and take a walk in the isle.

@Beestring To each their own
Also I suppose you get to your luggage kept on the compartment above faster than others.

@allknowing To me, aisle seats give me access to move around more freely.

I always got the window seat in the few times I traveled, I don't know why I was that lucky. I love the window seats because I can see below from the plane's window and I love watching the land, sea, and clouds go by.
And I only went to the bathroom twice because I did all my personal necessities before boarding the plane.

I hated those toilets in the plane and tried my best not to use them. Once I fumbled trying to open the door.

@allknowing I sit where ever there was an empty seat. You did not get to choose.

Well, it sounds like you've experienced quite the adventurous flights! From playing human Twister to riding the Grand Canyon roller coaster, you've had your fair share of sky-high escapades. Who knew that choosing a seat and avoiding turbulence could turn into such daring feats? It's like you've mastered the art of turning a simple plane ride into an adrenaline-fueled adventure!

When it came to that ride from Las Vegas Las Vegas the entire plane experienced that turbulence as it was a small place carrying just the 14 of us.

I've been on plane about 19 times, and I always choose the seat next to window.
