What will I do now?

As I’m sure I’ve often mentioned before, I love my wellies (Wellington boots). On any wet day they are basically my go-to footwear, they are so easy to step into and they’re waterproof, I don’t have to worry about getting wet feet, muddy shoes, or spoiling my smart leather boots with watermarks.
I can dig the garden without getting soil in my shoes and I don’t have to worry about bringing dirt into the house because when I take them off I put them straight into one of those big shopping bags, mud and all, and keep them there until next time. I can wear them when I’m cycling in the rain so I don’t get the nasty situation of having all the rainwater run off my waterproofs and straight into my shoes!
This spring we seem to have had a lot of wet days, and our little road gets quite muddy, so I’ve been wearing them even more often than usual.
A few weeks ago I developed a hard lump on top of my foot. The foot was puffy and painful too. After a day or two the swelling went away but the hard lump was still there, it felt like a bony lump but I couldn’t think what might have caused it. It felt like the sort of thing that could be caused by dropping something heavy on your foot, for example, but I didn’t remember injuring myself, not even anyone standing on my foot.
Then it suddenly disappeared again! Great!
But a week or so later the lump came back. Sometimes it was completely painless but other times it woke me in the night as it felt uncomfortable.
After this happened about three times I wondered whether it could possibly be anything to do with wearing wellies so much. I stopped for a few days and sure enough the lump went away. Hmm. Could be a coincidence of course… but then I did a lot of gardening wearing them and the uncomfortable feeling came back.
I can’t think why they should be a problem as I’ve been out and about frequently in wellies since I was about ten years old, so why would they suddenly cause a problem?
And the more pressing question is – what on Earth would I do if I had to stop wearing them??

Rather than stopping wearing those shoes I think you better consult a doctor about it.

Look up "bone spur on top of the foot" and see if that's what you're feeling.
I have bone spurs at the last joint (or first joint, closest to my feet) of both little toes. I had to get slightly larger shoes to make my feet stop hurting all the time. My feet don't hurt and don't swell up in that area now... I don't want surgery on my feet but that's what the doctor recommended to end the pain.
I hope that isn't what you're feeling, but your symptoms sound like my symptoms but in a different part of the foot. Good luck.
By the way, if you grow things in the boots and then try to wear them, that may also be the cause for pain in your feet.

@Fleura You may be right, I don't know... I had a ganglion cyst on my index finger at the first joint. It persisted as long as I worked at Walmart. (over 14 years) But has disappeared since I haven't been at Walmart in two and a half years now.

@DaddyEvil I had one on my wrist about 30 years ago. I was told it would be there forever. It went away not too long afterwards : )

I did look into it and at first that was what I thought it must be, only right on the top of my foot (the cuneiform-metatarsal joint). But a bony spur couldn't disappear literally overnight like that. Eventually I concluded it must be a ganglion cyst, which can go away again although they normally do it over a longer period and most often develop at the wrist joint. There's nothing at all there at the moment so fingers crossed it won't come back!

Maybe you should see a podiatrist. Maybe there's more going on than meets the eye. Good luck!

Those Wellies have become very useful footwear, for your everyday work. I'd ask a doctor, what might be causing this problem. I had a pair of shoes I loved. The top was rubbing on a tiny mole, which eventually I had burned off. After that, the pain was gone:)
