This Eastern Box Turtle was in our backyard when I got home from school this afternoon. I actually found him before either of the dogs realized he was there. I'm calling it a he, though it could be a she. Once Sophie discovered the turtle, she spent some time sniffing it before deciding it was something she should bark at. I took the photo before she began sniffing it. After Sophie decided to start barking, I relocated the turtle out of the yard into the woods beyond the fence out of harm's way. I'll check on it after dinner to see if some peace and quiet brought it out of its shell and on its way. Any guesses as to why the turtle decided to wander into our yard?

Your grass looked greener than the grass in the forest.

It was definitely greener than that on the other side of the fence.

@DaddyEvil Isn't that the truth? Sophie has dozens of toys but would rather chew up a napkin than gnaw on her nylabones.

@DWDavis I know.... but animals always want what's kept from them... just like some humans.

The dogs don't so much like to play in it as they like to sniff out all the smells from the critters who pass through at night.

@wolfgirl569 Ace doesn't like to get his paws dirty. Sophie loves to dig.

That’s a great picture you caught. I guess the turtle knew his kind was welcome there, and was waiting for it’s closeup.

We keep most of our land as natural as possible for the benefit of the little wild critters.

@DWDavis That sounds like my friend, Naomi, with her land. It’s like a little nature preserve.

Because as humans, we've taken away of the natural environment. This causes animals to wonder away from their natural eco systems to find food and shelter.

We maintain most of our 2 acres as a natural area for wildlife and have an abundance of critters that inhabit it. Turtles, snakes, lizards, mice, opossums, raccoons, too many species of birds to count, including hawks and owls, and have even had deer nest and give birth to fawns in the clearing near the house.

@DWDavis Not everyone does or can, which is where you find wildlife where people live.

If you have some water body close to your house the turtle might have come out of it in search of land to dry up or lay eggs.

We have a small pond in our woods that was created about 14 years ago when a hurricane downed several interlaced trees and left a rather large hole. The hole filled with water and has remained so ever since.

@DWDavis The turtle might be staying there and has come out to dry up as it does sometimes.

It will bite if you're not careful, but only in self-defense.

Maybe he/she saw some interesting vegetation in your yard. They show up in this area from time to time. They seem to come out often after a rain.

That is a very cute turtle. The turtle must have been partying and got lost. It was International Turtle Day yesterday,

I didn't know there was an International Turtle Day. It wasn't where I left it when I checked after supper, so I hope it got to where it wanted to be.

Would it be looking for somewhere to lay its eggs? Or maybe your garden looked good enough to eat.

I couldn't be sure, but it may have been a female looking for somewhere to lay her eggs. Our yard wouldn't be a good place because Sophie would sure dig them up.

The turtle was probably a wanderer. He looks fine and dandy.

I have multiple turtle sightings every day. But that's because we have a almost four year old slider turtle in a 40 gallon tank in our room lol. I can also tell you how to determine the gender of the turtle, if you know you want to find out.

I have a feeling it probably inhabits our woods and came into the yard to munch on the grass. We usually spot one or two each spring.
