Short story: An apple tree pricked John's conscience, but not enough, to make a difference to him in his greed

John Jones had a neighbour with a large apple tree in his front yard.
All of the school kids going past his yard, would of course help themselves to an apple, or two, as they tasted very nice.
John also had tasted these apples, as the neighbour would give him a bag of them sometimes, as the tree beared fruit bountifully in season.
One day, there was a fire at John's neighbour's house, and it was burnt to the ground, but, fortunately, the old apple tree survived the fire, and even though, the neighbour had to find other lodgings, until his house could be rebuilt, he told John than he could help himself to the apples on his tree, as wanted.
John picked all of the apples next season, and he opened a stall, at his local church market, and he made a nice profit from his selling of these fine apples.
John had taken advantage of the situation, but it bugged his conscience a bit, that he had denied the local school-kids their opportunistic taking of apples too.
And his neighbour had hinted to him to only take the apples as needed, for his own use too. He felt some pangs of guilt about his greedy act in selling all of the apples on the tree, for his own profiting.
He let that thought, and the next one, go quickly though, as the kids were really just petty pilferers, stealing apples, without permission, from the tree, and he needed the money.
When we listen to our heart, instead of our mind, our conscience is not placated away like this.
John died that very next year, and so it was, that the year after that, the apple tree was full of apples, once more again, and the kids had their fill of them then again too.
We can never take back recommendations from our conscience, that we have not taken, at the right time, to take them.

Never doubt your conscience, nor your guilt at not following it.

Hope a nice lesson is learned from this post. Conscience is the light of Christ. We should follow our conscience and never ever doubt it.

Thanks. I agree, conscience is the light of God.
Yes, when we follow the light, it should also inspire us to love, and any feelings of discontentment, should be washed over then with love, and we will feel then the inner contentment of living within God, with his Holy Spirit in us, guiding and inspiring us, to live truly for God, a life of love, and service.

@Nakitakona Yes, we should be humble enough to accept its guidance too.

"Take only what you need." I am reminded of community stalls where residents can help themselves with whatever is displayed there for free. but are also encouraged to share what they have with the community. It is such a good practice, and I hope the world would emulate it soon.
There's no place for greedy persons in a community who care for each other. If one's conscience nags one, something wrong must have been done and corrective measures have to be undertaken.

Yes, we have a church dinner smorgasbord every so often here, and I am always surprised to see the same couple always there, filling their plates with double rations to everyone else, and then even having the gall to then go back for second, and third platefuls, too.
Some people have such thick skins, and hard faces, that they do not care much about anyone else except for themselves.
Yes, we also have some farms here, that place produce at their gate, and they have an honesty box there for people to put what they think is a fair price for the produce.
Community-mindedness is spreading here slowly, and in other places around the world too.

Conscience does prick the most thick-skinned even however much they wish them away.
I heard my friend say he had made a vow to donate 10% of his earnings but then pared it down to net earnings after tax etc. He asked me - am I being too smart?
I told him to go by his conscience.
I take care not to trifle with my conscience.

Yes, at some level, we all have an active conscience working in us, at all times.
We can push it aside, ignore its light, and message, shining/guiding to us the right answer, or we can stick with our conscience, and do what is right for us to do, in our life.
Or, as your friend did, we can placate ourselves, by half following the gist of our conscience, more for show, rather than for realness of purposeful right living.
One way, is the half hearted, cheating way, of our mind, the other the full hearted, loving true, honest way, of our heart.
