Day 318
(Song of Solomon 6:4-10) THE BELOVED O my love, you are as beautiful as Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem, awesome as an army with banners! Turn your eyes away from me, for they have overcome me. Your hair is like a flock of goats going down from Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock of sheep that have come up from the washing; everyone bears twins, and none is barren among them. Like a piece of pomegranate, are your temples behind your veil. There are sixty queens and eighty concubines, and virgins without number. My dove, my perfect one, is the only one, the only one of her mother, the favorite of the one who bore her. The daughters saw her and called her blessed, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her. Who is she who looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, awesome as an army with banners?
When you read a romance, you want a description of the main characters so you can picture them in your mind’s eye.
Solomon paints a word picture of his beloved. She was the most beautiful woman among the women of his court.
As Christians, the bride of Christ, how does Jesus see you? What descriptive words would you hear from Him?
You often hear that beauty is skin deep and must come from the inside. Yet your outside beauty is what attracts you to others. If you don’t have beauty on the inside, you won’t see it on the outside. You will be a glittering vessel with nothing to commend you.
Your beauty must be seen and felt. When people look at you, what do they see? Do they see a person given to hospitality, someone who takes care of their household, is not a busybody given to gossip, a person graceful in speech and action? Do you display the fruit of the Holy Spirit in everything you do? Does love guide your actions? If people can say that about you, you are beautiful, and words will not be enough to show people your beauty.
Solomon compared his beloved’s beauty to sheep without blemish or spot. Everything about her was perfect. Can Jesus say the same about you? What do you need to change to become beautiful in Jesus’ eyes?
Let’s pray: Father, when You look at me, let me be beautiful in Your sight. Let me display the fruit of the Spirit in everything I do and let everything be governed by love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
