Soda or Pop? Couch or Sofa?

What we call an item varies from region to region and country to country. For example, in the UK they call the trunk of a car the boot and an elevator a lift. What about in your region of the US or in your country? Do you call a soft drink a soda or pop? Do you call the piece of furniture pictured above a sofa or a couch? What state are you in or what country are you in? I call a soft drink a pop and the piece of furniture a couch; and I live in Ohio in the United States. What about you? Photo Credit: Pixabay

My aunt lived in eastern NC all her life and called a car trunk a boot. We call it Coke or Pepsi or whatever it is, and we sit on a couch. But we call lunch dinner and dinner supper. We've lived in eastern NC for many years.

Being an Army brat I tend to use either of the terms as I've know people who've used both terms for soda pops and sofas or couches, it just depends on who I'm talking to and of course whether or not those items are ever discussed.

I used to as a kid, we used to mimic different adults behind their backs especially if they happened to have an accent because they were from a foreign country. We were so mean.

@LindaOHio Ever since I took a course in college called History of the English Language, I have been fascinated by the etymology of words and the evolution of the language.

Funny how a couch or sofa got two names but a loveseat is just a loveseat. Seems kind of unfair actually. lol

@porwest The English language is actually very complex. I would hate to be a foreigner and have to learn all the words that sound the same but are different, etc.

I live in Oklahoma, and growing up I always called a soft drink, a “pop”. I don’t know when I switched, but as an adult I have changed to calling it a “soda”. Going by what I hear, I think most Oklahomans use the term “pop”. As for the other, I’ve always called it a “couch”.

We are the same as you, pop and couch. We have cousins in Michigan, and they say soda and sofa. Of course they say that we have an accent, so what do they really know? Michiganders have a very distinct accent.

I am from Wisconsin but currently live in Illinois, although I was born in New Jersey and have lived in many states throughout the country... Translation? I'm lost. lol In any event I call it a couch and I will drink a soda. I do call a water fountain a bubbler though. Not that you asked. But I thought I'd throw it in there.

My family always said soda and sofa. I think it's a different term for different areas of the country. I still say soda, I probably always will for some reason I'm not sure of. I have rather converted some for the other word and now often I say couch, not sure why except more people say that here than sofa. Words can be weird.

I'm in the UK - specifically, the Midlands in England. Even within the area, there are differences between what people call things. Soft fizzy drinks are 'pop' (I think that's the most common in England). I wouldn't call it soda because soda, to me, is soda water (which is fizzy but it's not pop). That item of furniture, I would call a sofa or settee. Couch is used by some people but I can't say I hear it a lot where I live. There are lots of words that we have around here that are different if you go a little further. There are certain words that we know are used in certain general areas but there are some you can pinpoint to very specific areas because, although they'll generally be understood everywhere, they're only used within a couple of towns.

I live in southern Missouri and call a soda a soda but understand when someone calls it "pop'. (I think most people here call all sodas "Coke", no matter which brand/flavor they're actually talking about.) I use couch and sofa interchangeably.

I call it a couch. I find it interesting what people call common things in different areas of the world. I called it pop while I was growing up. It changed to soda shortly after I moved from Wisconsin, but occasionally, I call it pop. I'm from Green Bay, Wisconsin, the only state that puts pasta in their chili.
