Then the tide came back in

Earlier today, the water levels dropped when the tide went out. This afternoon the tide came back in with a vengeance, and the water rose higher than before. In the photo, I circled the area where the water has risen above the seawall out by the dock. In the attached video, you can see how the tent sites have been inundated. No worries about us, though. It would take a lot more wind over a lot longer period of time to threaten our campsite. https://youtu.be/1N67gMGROqQ

I am keeping a close watch on the situation. From what I can see, the water shouldn't get much higher than it is. By morning, the wind is due to change direction. That and the outgoing tide should see the levels drop considerably.

@DaddyEvil I appreciate the sentiment. If I wasn't sure we'd be okay, trust me, I'd have packed up and left hours ago.

@DWDavis Okay. I'd just hate to see anything happen to you or your wife.

Isn't it better in such situations to stay as far from the water and not camp for some time alongside? Well perhaps you can judge the local situation better!

@DWDavis 50 years means that you would be practically knowing each nook and corner during the course of the river!

I know this river pretty well. I've fished, boated, and camped along it for over 50 years. If I'd thought there was any real danger, I would have stayed away.

You know you’re in trouble when the geese who were there earlier have gone for scuba gear! Glad your campsite is high and dry.

We did watch a mated pair of ducks swim across the road shortly after I finished the video.

It looks like a good place to go swimming.

The water on this side of the dock covers a road and is only a foot or so deep. Out past the dock, the river water does not meet the standards for safe swimming due to some of the stuff that flows down from upstream. After the flooding goes down and the runoff has past through, it should clear up and be safe for swimming again, though the campground does forbid swimming off the dock.

This part of the river is actually a tidal basin. High tide combined with a strong northeast wind means high water.

It did get high, but it's gone down now. This afternoon, the sun came, and it finally warmed up.

The main part of the campground is high enough to avoid flooding in all but the most extreme conditions, such as Tropical Storms and Hurricanes.

It would be a bit devastating to have pitched a tent there. I'm glad your campsite is safe.

There was a camper van in Tent Site 1, the farthest tent site from the river. They moved after the water reached their hub caps.

@JudyEv They were off camp visiting family, and the camp staff called and told them they should come back and move their van. Whoever they were visiting brought them back, they moved and then went back to whatever family event it was.
