The 'eyebrow flash,' which is a swift lifting of the eyebrows, is a common greeting among Filipinos. Some people will find it weird, but it is always a cultural thing. I do think that they have their own ways of greeting others, whether they are strangers or not. Sometimes Filipinos point at something by protruding their lips. Are there any gestures that are common in your country? Image Credit: giffiles.alphacoders.com

Generally, Americans just smile at each other, or nod. You’re more likely to get a smile in the Midwest.

I agree with you. I also nod when meeting a stranger. A big smile will happen if he or she is smiling to me.

That is interesting and I would miss them all because I would not notice and if I did I would not know what it means. No wonder people always say rude Americans.

You've been living in California too long. I know you'd hate to make your way to Oklahoma probably, but we'd greet you in quite a friendly manner.

@AmbiePam I was born in Missouri and lived there first 10 years of my life, but you are right this place has corrupted me. I often wonder what I would be like if I just stayed there. I have been through Oklahoma and never really stopped to talk to people but imagine its similar to Missouri and Kansas and you are right very nice people and a lot more polite than the average California person.

@crossbones27 I do think you have your own way to greet people out there. I wondered why some people would think that way about Americans.

I haven't noticed it here lately. For the reason that they are still wearing face masks in public. Unless if I look at their eyes when talking with them.

Europeans do the same as Americans, we just smile at each other. Protruding lips is considered not polite and gross.

I do think that some Muslim countries will not in favor in such gestures. I had experienced this before and it was not a good one.

@Shavkat When we visit other countries we must first investigate what is considered offensive. Protruding lips would be seen as an offence here.

People smile and nod at each other where I live. I wouldn't recognize a lifted eyebrow as anything except a facial "tic" and hope the person was feeling okay.

I think involuntary twitching of facial muscles is an excuse situation.

@Shavkat I don't know if it's an excuse or not... Sometimes, when I am stressed, my lower or upper eyelid will twitch for a few minutes involuntarily.

I also wave my hand sometimes. Smiling is the best way to greet others.

@Shavkat Smiling lets people know you’re friendly. Although a smile might mean something different in another country.
