Good Afternoon

How are you all doing? It's been a busy day here. The bills are paid, the groceries are bought and put away, I've had two naps today, played my games, and now, while eating lunch, I'm back here with you.
I'm a little disappointed with the blood type diet. In the few weeks I've been on it, I'm not losing any weight, I'm gaining. I don't want to gain, so I'm going to try to do something else. The HAM diet. In case you're wondering, it has nothing to do with pork. It's Half As Much.
When I started on the Whole30 diet plan 7 years ago, I lost 16 pounds in the first month. Now, I know that was all water weight, but the fact is, I lost weight. When I went onto Paleo, I continued to lose until I lost 80 pounds in five years. In a matter of two years, I've put back most of what I lost.
Now, one thing I refuse to do is buy large clothes. I can still fit into the clothes I bought as I lost weight and went down a size. The only thing I can't fit in is my swimsuit. I needed a new suit so I bought the same size I had before. It doesn't fit because I gained weight.
What am I doing about it? I'm still eating healthily. But the weight is going on instead of off. I'm walking, exercising on the bike, and doing what I can to lose, but nothing is helping.
Because, I've gained, I've slowed down. So, even though I'm still exercising, the weight has caused me to walk slower and not as far. I was doing six miles on the bike, I can only do five now. But I'm still exercising.
I see my doctor for my yearly wellness in a couple of months. Getting an appointment with him before then would be impossible. It takes a minimum of three months to get an appointment with him. Talking to him is also impossible, but I will try, or tell him I want a new doctor.
Last year when I saw him and he told me I needed to lose weight, uh, duh! I asked him what diet I should go on. Without asking me anything about me, he said Mediterranean. I gained. I also gained on the Vegetarian. Now, I've gained on the blood type. I don't know what happened to ME that I'm not losing no matter what I do.
I've looked at the different diet plans and the only one I can come up with that might have any affect would be the HAM diet. I'm also going to eat those foods I KNOW will help me lose weight, or at least have in the past - mostly seafood. Though salmon has more calories than most other fish, I saw the scale move down when I ate it.
When I bought groceries this morning, I bought foods good for my blood type. Fish, eggs, and bananas. So, if I have to eat breakfast three times a day to lose, or fish for breakfast, by golly, I will. I want to see positive action on the scale and I don't want to wait a year to see it happen.
I know some of you have mentioned in passing that I haven't posted about my weight or diet in a while. It's hard for me to admit I'm back up to 218 when I started at 255 seven years ago this August and got down to 170. I know I cheated here and there. But not to the extent that I went nuts and gave up on the diet completely.
I saw myself in a window, not a mirror, but reflected in a window yesterday, and I'm appalled at what I look like again. My torso is still good, but my trunk and legs are awful again. It's no wonder I can't get a swimsuit on.
So, along with the HAM diet, I'm not going to step on the scale unless I have to, which I need to every six weeks for my hospital appointment. I have that coming up in a week and a half. I can only hope by then I can see some loss. After the hospital appointment, the next time I'll step on the scale will be on my birthday in July.
If you have any suggestions on what I can do that I'm not already doing, please suggest away. I'm sick of looking at myself again. This weight has to go. I'm not buying new clothes to accommodate my larger self. So, the only option I have is to lose.
Thanks for reading my vent about my weight. Being isolated with the sinus infection didn't help. It was good to get out and walk yesterday and work on the bike this morning. One of the women at the exercise class said she missed me sitting on the bike in the corner while they all exercised on Wednesday. I missed it too. But I wasn't going anywhere with the way I was feeling.
Are you struggling with your weight too? Don't make me feel like I'm alone in this battle. Thanks for reading. Image courtesy of Pixabay.

I don't believe in diets. I used to. I used to get the book o every diet that came out but, what I found was that none of them work. If a person doesn't change their outlook on food then as soon as you go off the diet the weight is going to go back up anyway. The trick is to take everything you like and enjoy eating out of the food make-up that you eat. The bottom line is that diets never worked for me.
I hope you do well finding a diet that works well for you. Good luck!

@just4him .......It gets harder as we mature. I find that being sure to eliminate the bowel helps to some extent.

What about weight watchers or weight loss surgery? Usually though for weight loss surgery they want you to have been on some medically supervised diet plan. I think you could use the aid of a nutritionist, rather than just relying on yourself. Someone to check in with and help you with a tailored plan.

@just4him My ex mother-in-law lost about 60 pounds, following the Weight Watcher's program. She looked great! They allow desserts and snacking, which helped her stay satiated.

The diet yo-yo is hard, isn't it? Brenda (mother) tried so many of the fad diets back in the 70s and 80s but her weight went up/down up/down... I've always been on the heavier side. I haven't followed a diet like you because seldom have I seen anyone who has been on one able to keep the weight off.
I know only of a couple of friends who lost weight who did it the old fashion way, eating less (no diets. no cutting something from what they enjoy eating) and exercising more, Nothing strenuous with exercising, just walking every day. Perhaps that is the best way? Eat sensible portions, and keep on doing your exercising as you do. I pray what ever you decide on it works for you and the weight comes but more importantly, stays off.

The blood type diet is crap. A vegetarian diet can be even worse than just eating whatever because people load up on cheese, carbs, butter, etc. and think that somehow they are eating better.
I don't know if you are still eating several bananas and potatoes each day but I would reduce those if you are. Focus on lean proteins (seafood, turkey, etc), limit your carbs, and try to include more green vegetables with each meal. If you need potassium so much then buy supplements. Try a bunless turkey burger with cauliflower rice or green beans for lunch. Tuna salad over a green salad. Meatza is always good. this is the general idea but I use ground beef and salsa, and bell pepper strips as toppings. Check out the Skinnytaste web site. She has a ton of low carb, paleo, etc. recipes.

Thank you. I have cut down on the bananas and potatoes. I haven't eliminated them. Heck, I would go into withdrawal if I cut out bananas.
I already take enough supplements, required, I don't want to take more in place of real food. My freezer is now full of fish. I'll be limiting the turkey and beef. I might take the beef out completely again like I did before. I really like the Paleo diet. It's where I lost most of my weight.

During the second year of your weight-loss program, you started counting calories. At that time, you were successfully losing about 5 pounds a month. I remember this method worked for you. It allowed desserts and treats to be included, which kept you motivated.

@just4him When I first started the diabetic diet, they recommended calorie/carb counting. The simple reason, most diabetics need to lose weight. I tried to keep my calories sufficient, but I lost about six pounds on their low-carb diet. Adding yogurt, cheese and a variety of nuts helped, but not much.

I feel that 100%, but you already know that with my most recent posts about my health. I am sorry that you are struggling and gaining even though you are trying as hard as you can! the HAM diet may definitely work because it would be less calories in which is a good way of losing weight in theory.
I'd suggest no carbs, but I know many are against it. But if insulin is being spiked, we store fat...and carbs are what spike insulin. I know I have lost some when I have stuck to low carb for more than just a few days.
Back in the day (over 10 years ago now) I had got down to 130 pounds by working out 3 hours every single day and eating very low calorie. ...I am almost 100 pounds heavier than that now.
Hopefully soon we can both start losing again and not feel the way we do when we look in the mirror.

I won't say carbs aren't my problem, but I'm not diabetic, so I don't need to worry about insulin. I'm trying to eat more protein and less carbs-potatoes. I'm also eating veggies, which I know you don't like. However, I love fruit over veggies any day.
Exercising is the key to any weight loss plan.

@MommyOfEli2013 There's someone here who was told by her doctor not to exercise, but to follow the nutrition program he prescribed her. She's looking good.

@just4him Everyone needs to worry about insulin even if not diabetic - I think. It will still spike when you eat carbs to lower blood sugar...just diabetics pancreases stop working so it doesn't lower it like it is supposed to. or in type 1's they don't make their own insulin.
I just don't like veggies, I don't like fruit either lol. More protein is good, and not all carbs are bad for sure. But in general carbs do the most damage...
and I follow someone who lost over 100 pounds with NO exercise, all they did was cut out carbs.

Oh, girl, you're not alone. I lost 30 pounds, and then my doctor put me on a medication that caused me to gain it all back. I never would have taken it had I known that was a side effect.
You mentioned suggestions? Well, obviously sugar isn't fat, but sugar affects our weight, so I thought I'd mention bananas have an awful lot of sugar. One banana isn't going to hurt as it's a fruit after all, but even pesky doctors like to point out normally healthy things we might want to go easier on.
One friend of mine loves watermelon, but her doctor told her to quit eating so much because the amount of sugar she was getting from the amount she ate was too much for her body type. You've also probably thought of this, but maybe suggest your doctor check your thyroid? Mine is underactive, and that can slow your metabolism, and make it incredibly hard to lose weight. I'm now on a thyroid medication, and it's just $4 at Wal-Mart without using insurance.
These are just vague suggestions; I'm just wracking my mind for possibilities because like you, I know what it's like to work your rear off with little to no results. But you can do it, Valerie. I believe in you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm down to one banana a day. Though I admit when they get ripe, I will eat them instead of wasting them. So maybe three on that last day of ripe bananas. Otherwise, I am limiting myself on them.
I know my grandson had thyroid cancer. I'll talk to him about it when I see him.
Thanks for your suggestions.

@just4him the summer of 2020 I actually reached my goal weight. I eventually put some back on and have been eating healthy and working out again since January. It’s so easy to gain and so hard to get it off. I’m hoping to reach my goal again by September.

Have the doctor do a full work up. You could be too high or low in something. Also thyroid issues can cause weight gain. I am rooting for you. But remember you are beautiful. The soul is much more important for beauty than the body.

That's true, but I can't get my swimsuit on my soul.
If I can get him to listen to me, he probably will order a full blood panel. Though I just had one last month when I had my hospital visit. I just looked at the test results. I wouldn't know which one involved the thyroid.

I need to get a new swimsuit too. But I don't wear it alot in the summer. Every time I would like to wear it, I have my period so I have stopped wearing one around my great-aunt's pool. I don't swim anyway. I have to get new pajamas because mine's top has been gapping open.

Good luck with your new diet. And good for you and your two naps. I can't even seem to get one nap a day. I can't turn my brain off long enough. I have no appetite, have to remind myself to eat. Not a good problem to have. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Talking about weight. Last year I lost 10 kilos from 70. I maintained my 60 kilos weight. Lately I weighed in and I gained 2 kilos.

I have always struggled with my weight. I found that nothing I did would work. However, I started Slimming World about 10 years ago and lost around 6 stone. I maintained a healthy weight up until Covid. I put on a little bit, fluctuated a bit, and found it difficult to get back to my target weight (although I am still around 5 stone lighter than I was when I started Slimming World).
One thing I found was that exercise made no difference at all. As I have said to a few people before - if walking helped to lose weight, I wouldn't have been overweight in the first place as I used to walk for miles on a regular basis.
I always thought I ate quite healthily but I learnt that some foods are not as healthy as you'd think. I also found that eating more actually helped with weight loss. It wasn't about the amount of food or the calories but about the other nutritional benefits. The main thing was to reduce sugar. It's OK in fresh fruit but there are a lot of other things that contain more sugar than you'd think, and there's a different between how it's processed in the body and some other sciencey stuff about chemical changes.
Anyway, good luck with your weight loss. It can be challenging but, apart from my recent issues, the hardest part was finding something that worked in the first place.

I'll look up Slimming World and see what it is. Great job taking off so much weight.
I buy things with no added sugar. I know foods have a natural sugar content. You don't need to add extra sugar.
Thank you. I'm a work in progress.

I have always struggled with my weight. I know I'm at like 260, but I also know I've developed muscle tone. I also know weight goes up and down. And, people reach a Plato, where they might start going the other way. Pick a diet you can stick to and work on getting back to your usual exercises. I am sure you can do it.
