"Y. M. C. A." was written by Jacques Morali and Victor Willis and recorded by the American disco group, the Village People in 1978. The Village People consisted of 6 men dressed as a Cowboy, Construction Worker, American Indian Chief, Military Man, Leatherman and Policeman.
"Y. M. C. A." reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 in over 15 other countries. The group sold 12 million copies worldwide.
The song remains popular to this day and is played at sporting events in the U.S. and Europe. In 2020 "Y. M. C. A." was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".
The Village People in the video below don't really do the "dance" completely. They are supposed to make arm movements to depict the "Y", "M", "C" and "A".

This is one song I never liked. I thought it was too campy. Besides, during disco days, there was always someone who would do jumping jacks to this song on the dance floor making it hard for everyone to find room to dance

I remember dancing to Y.M.C.A. when it first came out. It got a lot of play on teen night in one of the clubs my friends and I frequented, as well as at parties we'd throw or go to. We even came up with a finger version of the dance to do while listening in the car.
