A handsome bantam at our house-sit

I was going to tell you all about the Pekin bantam. Now I discover the bantam in the photo is not a Pekin at all. I think they are Barbu D’Uccles which I’d never heard of till now. It seems these are available in Australia so I hope I’m right. They are cute little birds with feathered legs and feathers on the cheeks as you can see in the photo. I can imagine the legs getting pretty mucky in muddy weather.

@JudyEv Yes, he is. But his little feet looked so pretty to me. Maybe it's the color of the feathers...

@AmbiePam They look funny when they run. They look like they have bell-bottom trousers on.

I think there are two or three roosters in the pen but they don't seem to fight.

@JudyEv That's good they don't. Means they have enough hens

They look funny when they run as they look like they're wearing pyjamas.

This is a Booted Bantam Buckbeak, my grandfather had those. I can easily imagine why it's called "booted".

I can't believe his legs are still white, no matter what the weather is like.

Never seen any bird with feathered legs. Wonder how they clean them. Cats do their own cleaning

@JudyEv Our Gamma looked like him but without feathers on his legs (lol) He was so much a part of our life He would even go upstairs on his own making us search for him.

I guess the birds clean their own feathers but I'm not sure about that.

@CarolDM I think they're a Belgian breed but we do seem to have a lot of fancy breeds in Australia, no matter where they come from originally.

Apparently the feathers on their feet get in the way and mean they don't scratch about so much which would be a good thing in some cases. I got a bit fed up of ours digging big holes everywhere.
