In the mountains the sun sets early.

I realized in heights above 8000 feet, the days are shorter. The sun sets early over there. There is another reason that the mist and fog create a blanket below the clouds. These second layer stands in the way for sunlight. So by 4 pm it is dark in the mountains. Travellers are required to plan accordingly.

It isn't that the sun sets earlier, it's just that the mountains create a shadow over the lower mainland when the sun is behind the mountains. At this time of year in the South the days are shorter anyhow.

At our other house, we were on the west side of a slight hill and it would be almost mid-morning before the sun appeared although of course it was light well before that.

thanks Hillary due to the fog and mist in the mountains the visibility is also low.
