This cockerel's days might be numbered

At our current house-sit, there is a large pen with perhaps 20 or 30 laying hens and two big white roosters. The birds are fed morning and night but are kept shut up until around midday. This ensures that most of the eggs are laid before they’re let out to forage in the paddocks. We’re collecting around 12 to 16 eggs a day. One of the roosters has become very savage and flies at us every time we go in the yard. You can see his talons/spurs in the photo. If he connected, we could get badly scratched but we’ve now found a solution and take a garden rake into the pen with us. We can fend him off quite easily with this but he still insists on attacking it. I think he might be made into chicken soup once the owners return.

He's tired of you taking his babies away from his hens... It's understandable behavior but I wouldn't like him being aggressive, either.

@JudyEv Oh, yeah... and he looks like he'll make some good soup, too.

It is understandable but not really acceptable when he has such sharp talons.

It's possible he thinks he's protecting his flock from strangers.

Yes, that's probably true but he should be used to the conditions as nothing really has changed. We were warned that he might attack.

That sounds scary. Is it normal for them to behave that way?

Some do get vicious. It's a male thing - looking after their harem, etc.

Roosters can be very aggressive and I know that they are dangerous. Keep the rack with you when you go out.

@JudyEv It is possible he is just bullying to show that he takes care of the hens, but better to be ready to keep him far from you.

We've moved it closer to the house so we can pick it up on our way to the sheds. We were almost caught without it the other evening which wouldn't have been good.

Sometimes, they just turn mean. And they stay that way, you are correct. He may be slated for the cooking pot soon!

I wonder what the behavior change can be contributed to. Just not used to new people, and he decided to get vicious? Not that you can ask him...

Glad they warned you. I had one that would attack a shovel. That mean thing sold for 16 dollars at auction after trying to attack people from his cage

I've seen them at agricultural shows (fairs) like that. Trying to attack people from their cages. You got a good price for him.

@Judyev Roosters can indeed be vicious. We had one particular enormous brute the attacked anyone who went near it but my brother was able to pick him up, cuddle him and even bath him. Our hens were free range and dropped eggs all over the place. Some of them came into the house in the early morning to do so - one in the living room hearth, another on top of the wardrobe in my bedroom, and announced their achievements in the customary way and the was no sleep to be had after that.

It's handy that we don't have to go searching for eggs. Strange that the rooster tolerated/liked your brother. We've been careful not to provoke this one but it hasn't helped.
