EATING OUT--JUNE 2023--PART 2

Silly me! I thought with COVID more or less in control and inflation not as high as it was that restaurant prices would start going down but doesn't look that way! As always we hit Big Louie's at least once a month and each time I have been sticking to the lunch specials as the prices are still reasonable. I had one of Louie's lunch combos consisting of a large slice of pizza, soup or salad and half a sub of the customer's choice which came to $7.99 and Allen had the Chicken Francaise for $11.99 so with drinks, tax and a tip the check was reasonable for lunch. The following week was Allen's birthday and I took him out for lunch at a place we both enjoy and haven't been to in a while The Cheesecake Factory and I must admit I was a but taken aback at their lunch prices but the food was good and the cheesecake--I had the Chocolate Godiva and Allen had the Lemon Raspberry--'to die for'! For our main course I had the Garlic Shrimp while Allen had the Chicken Cosetta. What got me though was my coffee--plain old coffee--was $4.95 and his Arnold Palmer (Iced tea and lemonade) $5.50. Long story short--$100 for lunch! The food was good but......... The third restaurant on the list was another 'old timer'--The Courtyard Cafe in Wilton Manors, a place we hadn't been to in a long time, and recently got new owners. Allen had the Chicken Strips platter and I had a Turkey Sandwich--nothing special but wasn't at all bad. Check with tax and tip came to about $16 each. Last, but not least, after seeing "No Hard Feelings" we decided to go to the Lotus a couple of blocks away from the movie theatre. It is not easy to find a great Chinese restaurant in Fort Lauderdale but Lotus is one of the better ones with reasonable prices. Allen had the Cashew Chicken and I had the special Fried Rice with shrimp, pork and chicken and we both had water to drink. (Ah, I remember the good old days when you automatically got a complimentary pot of tea with your main course? Spoken like an old man!) The check with tax and tip came to about $20 each. Can't complain---Chinese, Italian, American and 'deli'--good food--prices a 'bit' high in one case-- but all in all we left each place satisfied!

Prices keep going up on everything. It’s a good thing I’d rather eat my own home cooking. I’d go broke eating in restaurants.

Agreed. It's been so long since my hubby and I stopped eating at restaurants. We used to have street food 1 in a week but we stopped. Everything is too expensive.

I have found even the cheaper restaurants are creeping up in price to be closer to the 'high end' prices. I love trying different places but it gets very expensive. There used to be some perfectly nice independent restaurants or gastropubs that were reasonably price. Now, they're quite rare. It just doesn't seem that you get those little independent, good value places any more. It's either cheap bulk-buy microwaved rubbish or it's expensive. There isn't a lot in between.

I don’t remember prices coming down. Only going up. And up. And up.

Sounds like good food and the prices aren't too bad, I am glad the food was worth it,

Your restaurant prices are reasonable to me. We seldom eat at chain restaurants so our tabs can get spendy. Most of the time we also get good wait staff, too.

@GreatMartin I have moved into an area that has small cafes and am liking it. One lady has an English pasty and sausage rolls cafe. She surprised me last year. I told her I was going to make carrot cake for my hubby's birthday but the grater had been left behind when we moved. She took a grater off her restaurant wall and handed it to me to borrow!!! First time ever for me. I made a little apple pie and gave it to her as a gift for being so nice.

Restaurants are wildly expensive. What used to be $15-$20 here for a lunch is now close to $30, plus the tip. No, thanks! I will continue to cook!! Glad you found places semi-affordable for you.

@GreatMartin Especially when it's not a difficult thing to fix at home, for way, way less money!

@MarieCoyle But having been a waiter for 38 years I LOVE being waited on, not cooking, not doing dishes!

The Cheesecake Factory has lost their mind! But man, it sure sounds good! Actually, all of your choices sound delicious.

Prices in the restaurants have gone bonkers. It's a good thing I earn $$ from doing surveys and focus groups and have a good amount in PayPal. That's what we use for dinners out. Thanks for the reviews and critiques. Hope you and Allen have a good day.
