People are strange

During the Covid lockdown period, when no-one was allowed to go to the tip or to a charity shop with unwanted items, people in the village started to leave unwanted things outside their houses so that anyone passing on the daily ‘constitutional’ they were permitted could just take them away when they went past if they wanted. This habit has persisted and now people still leave things outside quite often. I must have seen at least a dozen boxes or piles of stuff outside houses when I was out and about at the weekend. It’s quite a nice idea, but it doesn’t always work for the best – if it rains for example, and someone has left books or magazines outside, no-one wants the soggy books and the owners don’t want to take them back either, so they basically just become litter. Anyway I digress… A couple of days ago I noticed someone at the end of our road had left a chest of drawers outside on the roadside. After two or three days it was still there, and I thought ‘I’m sure I saw someone on Freegle asking for a chest of drawers’ so when I got home I browsed through the posts and found a recent wanted post asking for a chest of drawers. I replied saying that neighbours had one for the taking, and attached a photo. The next day I got a reply saying ‘Not sure why you sent me this’. I would have thought it was obvious but I actually had to explain that it was because I had seen a chest of drawers being offered for free, and she had posted a wanted ad for a free chest of drawers! Is that strange or was I just expecting too much? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

@Fleura And what a handsome chest of drawers it is. I was recently quite comprehensively. derided and mocked by my daughter when I referred to our quite tall chest of drawers as the tallboy. She’d never heard that reference before.

You could have been mocked even more if you had referred to it as the haut bois...

I know exactly what you mean! My partner on the other hand is the exact opposite; he calls virtually any item of furniture a 'unit'. We tease him about a 'sleeping unit' and a 'sitting unit'

Maybe she had already purchased one and felt bad that she could have had one for free.

But just explaining in a good way wouldn't cause any harm

She said later that someone had already offered her one. Perhaps she thought that once she had received the item she asked for the computer system would magically know this and make her wanted post disappear?

She should have had replied with a thank you. I would have been amazed someone was kind enough to take the time to help me out. Yes, people are definitely strange.

No, that was strange, but maybe she had already gotten one. People put things out to the road here all the time, not just since covid.

She said later that someone had already offered her one. Perhaps she thought that once she had received the item she asked for, the computer system would magically know this and make her wanted post disappear? Or perhaps I should have telepathically received her brainwaves and known she no longer needed one?

Good for you to try to be helpful guess it just took her a while to realize what you were telling her. Did she finally take that chest of drawers?

Some people are just gobsmacked when someone does something nice for them or maybe something 'outside the box'. I hope she thanked you once it was explained.

She did get back to me and said 'Thank you that was kind' but that she had been offered one the day before. I can understand she didn't need it but why didn't she just say she already had one?

Indeed, sometimes people are strange but that's the way the world works. Often, a helping hand is not always the best action. but I hope you continue to be helpful and kind. Your good karma will soon find its way back to you.

That they are. Perhaps the person forgot that they were looking for something or made that posts. It happens.

Some people act so stupid. Even after someone explains something in clear language! They act like their brain isn't functioning on all eight cylinders.
