Watching the birds

For the past couple of weeks I have been waking up early every morning, at around 5 am, which is both a blessing and a curse. I like to be up early in the summer, I feel like I’m getting a head-start on the day. The downside is that since I still go to bed at the ‘normal’ time of between 11 and midnight, after a week or so I’m struggling to function! But anyway today I was up early and decided to take advantage of the time and get some work done before the rest of the family got up. Also before the neighbours’ gardener arrives and starts work with his array of noisy power tools It was lovely and quiet and I did quite well apart from one thing – first thing in the morning is when the birds literally flock to the garden for breakfast so every couple of minutes I found myself grabbing the binoculars to check on exactly what was out there! Still there are worse distractions… I’m almost finished now! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

It is a nice calm way to begin the day sitting outside and enjoy the birds visiting.

I agree, but I'm not sitting outside, I'm sitting at the table with my laptop. But I'm facing the window

That bird looks like a duck, but too small to be a duck. I get up at 5 also in winter because I like mornings more than evenings. I go to bed at 10:30.

@Fleura Yes, we have them, black and white and also white and yellow. They always stay near the stream.

@Fleura You are right with your guess, those I see are motacilla alba and flava. I see them from our windows, as the stream runs on one side of our garden.

@LadyDuck Are you sure those are not wagtails, pied ( Motacilla alba ) and yellow ( Motacilla flava) ? They are often found near water, espacially the yellow ones.

I do not think they are distractions. I in fact spend time watching birds frolicking in our bird bath

You definitely feel listless in the daytime because You only sleep for about 5 hours a night. Can you name the bird in the photo ?

I always had my camera next to my computer. I looked over the computer to the birdbath and any movement caught my eye and I could take photos. Mostly they turned out quite well, although taken through the glass.

We bought a digital SLR camera years ago but have hardly used it since it's bulky to take anywhere. I think I will dig that out and use it at home.

@Fleura I take a small one if we go anywhere but I use the SLR for the horse rides. You're right about them being bulky.

I hope the gardener is not waking up your household, or someone might need a chat about appropriate times to start work. I understand schedules, but once my neighbor below used a power saw at 6am, and we had to have one of those chats. Not surprisingly, I was not the only neighbor who chose to speak with him. Your birdie friend is adorable, and I only wish I had also seen it’s friends.

Such a beautiful creature! It would be a wonderful experience to watch these birds trooping into your garden. Thanks for sharing the photograph.

@fleura Can there be anything more enjoyable that a gallimaufry of small birds in an otherwise quiet summer garden?

An early start is a must for me, otherwise the day ends and l am left with unfinished business. Looking at the birds should be relaxing.
