An Unusually Short Walk

This morning, when I took Sophie for her walk, she started off with her normal enthusiasm. As we approached the second intersection up the road, she started urgently sniffing at something on the ground unseen by human eyes. I have no idea what it was, but she refused to go any farther in that direction and turned toward home, pulling with vigor. Halfway back, she calmed down. After she calmed down, I decided we would walk to the other end of the street. She seemed fine with doing so. Fine until we crossed the creek at the end of our property. There, she repeated what had occurred earlier. Again, she turned toward the house and pulled vigorously. At the driveway, she turned and pulled toward the house. Sophie seemed fine once we were inside. She took her treat. We played with one of her favorite toys. When she tired, I made coffee and breakfast while she watched. Now, she's sitting at my feet. I'll never know what stopped her on our walk this morning, but she had her reasons. Have you ever had a pet that behaved in an unusual way, but you trusted it has your best interest at heart when it did?

I am glad you listened to her. She was smelling or sensing something

I've learned to trust my dog's instincts.

@DWDavis I always trust mine while allowing for their personalities. I had one that hated all people except her family. . Thankfully I had another at the same time that liked most people so if she didn't like someone I didn't either.

Pets, especially dogs, see, and know so much that we do not.

That's why I trusted her and turned around. I knew she had a good reason, whether I saw it or not.

@DWDavis I saw that kind of behaviour on our dog when she spied a snake in the garden, she did not want to be near it nor fuss or confront it.

Years ago I had one of our dogs out in the back yard. The coyotes started howling; and he ran back to the house and waited at the door to be let in. He NEVER came back to the house on his own. He always wanted to stay out...but he knew that sound wasn't good! Have a great rest of your day.
