A second surprise!

I reported the other day about how I went out litter picking and came home with the promise of a set of garden chairs to refurbish. When I asked – via the Ring doorbell – if it was OK to leave the chairs and come back for them later, the occupant, who of course could see me, said ‘Yes that’s fine, I know who you are, I used to be the school caretaker’. I replied ‘Oh yes I remember you, and you used to keep chickens, do you still have them?’ and he said ‘Yes I have two – do you want them? I’m looking for a new home for them’. Turned out they had a new puppy, a Dachshund, and the poor thing was being attacked by the chickens (which are the closest living relatives of T. rex, remember). I had previously decided that now we were down to one chicken, Bluebell, I wouldn’t bother to get any more since the girls are not bothered so it’s down to me to do the work, and when we go away we have to keep looking for chicken-sitters. But of course I was too soft-hearted to say no. So in return for a couple of hours of community-minded litter-picking I gained a set of potentially nice chairs and two chickens, now named Violet and Teasel! Our chickens are scared of our dog. I do hope they all get along with Bluebell.

Chickens seem to relate to other creatures in one of two ways - either they're afraid of being attacked by them, or they will attack them.

It's a good thing she didn't have a horse to get rid of! I hope you enjoy Violet and Teasel. Have a great day.

You're lucky to live where you can have backyard chickens... free eggs and free manure

We were careful to buy a house that didn't come with any restrictive covenants or anything like that.

@Fleura My drunk uncle (most families have one it seems) used to return home after a night on the razzle with all sorts. He bought a fur coat to placate my aunt that had fleas (coat, not aunt) and was made to sleep in the garage with the coat as a blanket. Several “pedigree” greyhounds appeared as well.

The gifted chickens will be good company for Bluebell. They will be good friends for her.

Bluebell is rather a bully, but they seem to be rubbing along OK together.

@Fleura Maybe they’re used to being bullied.

Violet, Teazle and Bluebell. I bet not a one of them resemble their namesakes. Yes, I would be a softy as well. I certainly am about cats.

No, they don't really. Although Bluebell is a blueish grey sort of colour, and she does want to dominate everyone, so maybe she does. Funny I don't have a picture of her, must take one.

I haven´t had chicken for decades as there´s noroom here, but they are lovely. One of the first ones I had, (over 50 years ago) flew to the top of the fridge every morning and laid an egg there.

Poor baby Dachshund, I am sure he was terrified. So now you have also two chickens and they look good.

@Fleura Two or three eggs every week is better than no eggs at all.

I was warned they are both quite old but one of them does produce an egg every couple of days.

Isn't it funny how things just seem to appear? Most of my rescue sheep came about in similar fashion. Hopefully Violet and Teasel will provide lots of yummy eggs. And poor Dachshund puppy. He'll probably be traumatised for life.
