Firecrackers, Fireworks, and missing Fingers

Today is the 4th of July all around the world. Here in the US, it has special significance. July 4th is the number one day for hand and finger injuries reported by emergency rooms in the United States every year. Why do you suppose that is? It is because of the way we Americans choose to celebrate our Independence Day. We celebrate it by blowing stuff up. Sometimes, some of us forget to let go of the explosive device quickly enough and wind up blowing off fingers or blowing holes in our hands. Then there are those of us who revel in setting off our fireworks after dark. This is much more exciting because the colors are more visible and vibrant against a dark sky. Done with caution, this can be great fun for everyone in the neighborhood except for veterans with PTSD, small children frightened by the loud sounds, pets sensitive to the explosions, or those who have to get up and go to work early the next morning. We are lucky, to an extent, in our neighborhood. Most of the folks lighting off fireworks around here cease before 11 pm. The majority are done between 10 and 10:30. So, to all my fellow Americans, Happy Independence Day. I hope you enjoy a safe day as you celebrate. A question for my non-American myLot friends: Do you have any holidays of which fireworks and firecrackers are part of the celebration?

We will. We stay home and avoid the crowds. Our big fun will be grilling a rack of ribs to have with some corn on the cob and K's rosemary potatoes.

I forgot about New Year's Eve. Some of our neighbors to set off fireworks at midnight for that.

New Year is the one firework celebration here. And fireworks are banned from the public. But still they do it and are injured. And lately fireworks are being used at the wakes of bad guys killed by other gangs.

@DWDavis I´m not that fond of fireworks. I like the ones that are like stars in the air. But I can do without their sound.

It doesn't surprise me that it's the worst day for hand injuries.

Many injuries happen because people don't know what they're doing, or they've been drinking, or a combination of both.

Folks were still setting off fireworks that late. Very inconsiderate of them.
