Will be without a kitchen for over a month

Old kitchen

Our kitchen remodel is going to start this week. Tomorrow I think. The contractor will move the fridge into the living room, so hopefully we will still be able to use it. When he unhooks the stove from the gas that will be it. We won't have anything to cook on. We have a Breville oven where we can bake, toast, and reheat stuff but you can't boil stuff there or cook eggs either. We'll need to get a hot plate or whatever that's called that you plug into the wall and use to cook. Otherwise it is takeout only and doing that every day will really add up money-wise. We've picked out the cabinet color/design. And the layout has been finalized. Now we need to pick out the paint color for the walls, the kitchen tile, and cabinet countertop and backsplash. I'd prefer to use the countertop stone for the backsplash, but if we have to buy another piece for that we will have to resort to getting tile because stone is expensive. Need to make an appointment with the stone people. One place I contacted told me they can't come in to do measurements until September. That's not good for us as we want the kitchen done by end of August. That means they are out. Gotta call other places to see if they can do it when we need it. The appliances we've already bought, which cost us around $5600. And that was with the fourth of July sale. We need to notify the store two weeks before we need them so they can deliver everything then. Our contractor will install the appliances so we will save money that way. Not sure how much he will charge but it will surely be less than what the store wanted for it. Each appliance had its own installation charge. Being without a kitchen for over a month is not something that I am looking forward to but nothing I can do. The kitchen is from the 90s and so are the appliances. They need to be replaced.

Kitchen remodeling is so, so difficult. We need our kitchen, and not having it functional is tough. I hope it all goes smoothly.

Thank you. Thinking of buying paper plates and plastic utensils. Once the kitchen sink is gone it will be a pain trying to wash things in bathroom sink since it’s not large. Though if we cook and use pots and pans not sure how we will wash that. Shower I guess.

@MarieCoyle Remodeling is definitely a big inconvenience. Eating out all the time is definitely not something I want to do. Or takeout either. Not looking forward to not having a sink. Don't want to wash stuff in the shower.

@lovebuglena It's just not feasible to eat out all the time, nor realistic due to the cost. When we remodeled the last kitchen in the house we were in at that time, the kitchen was completely gutted. No stove, just microwave and a 2 burner hot plate, and an electric skillet and crock pot. We made it, but it was not easy. A friend had a small countertop dishwasher she loaned to me. It was wonderful...it held one meal's worth of dishes and silver. I had to hook the water up to a sink, of course. We had a tiny half bath that was totally blocked off by the remodel, and I sterilized that bathroom, made a path and a sign, only mom and dad allowed in here! put the little dishwasher on the countertop, and we did that for over a month (had to wait on countertops, ugh). I never envy anyone having a big kitchen remodel! The results are great, but it's very difficult.

Have no idea what the contractor will charge but my mom is going with him anyway as he did our bathroom remodel, and basement work, and did stuff at my mom’s too.

Ah, it's finally happening! I know it's a lot of work and moola . . . I hope in the end it will be everything you wanted and you will love it. Good luck with however you get the meals done outside the kitchen!

@lovebuglena That's good you will have that at least. Just some inconvenience for a while . . . but it'll be nice after it's all done!

Contractor said he can keep the gas stove in use for now. And then at one point he will move it to remove the old tiles and put stove back in. Hopefully, we will be able to use old stove for a while before new one comes.

I hope everything goes smoothly with the remodel. Based on past experiences working with my dad who was a general contractor , so many unexpected things tend to pop up when doing renovations and remodels. I hope that the remodel gods show favor to you and there are no hiccups along the way.

@lovebuglena I would have preferred them start right away. If I’m going to be inconvenienced, I want to get it over with as quickly as possible.

@moffittjc true. But if we demolish everything now and kitchen won’t be installed till like mid August then we will be inconvenienced more.

I thought construction guy was gonna start demolishing stuff and doing other work in the kitchen so we cleared everything out of the cabinets minus stuff from pantry. Kitchen guy told him not to start work yet as to minimize our inconvenience. Argh! I wouldn’t have cleared everything out yet.

I don't envy you. Why it should take over a month is hard to fathom. Enjoy your day.

@LindaOHio I hope not. It took months the first remodel he did. Plus he had covid once and didn’t come for almost two weeks.

I don't envy your remodel. I remember when my parents remodeled our kitchen many years ago. It was horrible and a huge mess. One suggestion that will keep the costs down, I do it myself since I did some calculating. I bought a microwave and can eat frozen dinners etc for less than I can cook a meal for. My dinners range from $1.48 to $3.48 and breakfast ranges from 98 cents to $1.25. I discovered that I can get the meals for a lot less at Wal Mart than most markets. I am able to stay within my budget of $125 a month for meals that way, rather than buy the ingredients individually and do the cooking.

Our new microwave won’t come till we are ready for all of our appliances. But we have a Breville toaster oven.

I can’t even think about how stressful it is to go through a remodel, not to mention knowing how much money will be spent. When it is finished though, I’m sure you guys will find it worth the trauma.

We already did a remodel of our master bath. And some work was done in the basement as well. It took a while. I did not want to do any more remodeling but my mom wanted to do it. And it is her house so I couldn't really say no.

Best of luck with the kitchen remodeling and I hope the job goes quickly, I don't have a regular kitchen so I get by with a toaster oven and a hot plate. I think you would do well with these two,

I hope so as well. I hope when we go to look at stone for countertop that we will be able to pick something and that it will be in stock and can be installed in August. I think that will be harder than picking floor tiles.
