Gosh he has a good memory!

I just called my local garage to book my car in for an MOT test. In the UK all vehicles over three years old have to have a test of ‘roadworthiness’ to check brakes, lights etc. once a year. Without the test certificate, your insurance is not valid either, so it’s quite important not to forget – and because mine falls due at the end of August during the school holidays it’s all too easy to forget all about it and go away somewhere! So I thought this time I would be more organised and book now for next month. I called the garage and the man (whose name I can’t remember, I’m embarrassed to say) said ‘Oh yes is it Fleur?’ Have you still got the Skoda? And have you had any more issues since the problem with the brakes last year? Now I wouldn’t be all that surprised if they remembered my car when I got there, it is quite memorable, but just from my voice on the ‘phone I was quite taken aback. I generally only go there once a year as I give my car its routine oil and filter change myself. Either he has an amazing memory or they have very few customers – and I know it isn’t the latter because when I do get there it’s difficult to find a space to leave the car because they’re so busy! Hmm, must try some memory exercises or something I think. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Maybe he also has call display on his phone. Is that a dent in the rear passenger door, or just an optical illusion?

I don't think he has because he asked for my contact number to write in the diary. Yes that is a dent. Someone reversed into me at the recycling centre about 8 years ago.

This happened to me yesterday. I called a nun who I had not spoken to in a year and not before that either. She remembered me by my voice.

Some people have an amazing memory. Surely he stored your phone number, so he knew who was calling. We also have to bring the cars (older than 3 years) for an annual check, but not to a normal garage, to the Cantonal check up station. We receive the letter and the date and hour for the appointment.

@Fleura May be he wanted to be sure that it was your only contact number. We have first to bring the car to an approved garage that checks that everything is okay. Then we bring the car to the Cantonal Check Up Station, they check that the garage fixed everything that needed to be fixed. They are picky.

I don't think he saved my number because he asked for my contact number to write in the diary. Here the garage has to be an approved test centre but I think any garage that has the right equipment can be certified.

Some people are incredibly good at remembering names. Perhaps you also have an incredibly distinctive voice!

I guess that's possible. You never really hear the sound of your own voice the way other people do, do you?

@JudyEv When I've heard recordings of mine I sound like a little girl!

@Fleura I was a bit dismayed when I heard mine. It's much more nasally than I would have liked.

Or perhaps you made such an impression you became unforgettable! I love the decorations on the car, too.

Oh dear that sounds a bit worrying! Thanks - the girls and I stuck them on after my partner bought them as a birthday present. That was about seven years ago so they are lasting rather well!
