An Unfortunate Event

So my dad and his wife are still in North Carolina, but when I checked Facebook today, I saw a surprising message from my cousin. She is the daughter of my Aunt Dana, who with her husband, also made the trip to North Carolina, along with my dad and Diana. Apparently, yesterday morning my Aunt Dana (71) fell getting out of the hotel shower, and her side hit the side of the tub. She has 5 broken ribs now, bless her heart. The ER said there was no punctured lung, thank goodness, but I feel badly for her. Luckily, she’s in otherwise perfect health. She runs marathons, and you wouldn’t think she was 71 years old. It does put a damper on their vacation, but they got most of it in. Have you guys ever broken a rib? I know a couple of you have mentioned it before. They still want to go to go one more place tomorrow, on my Aunt’s insistence, so we’ll see how that goes.

@RasmaSandra Wow! It must have missed them. They left this morning, and when I texted them they said they’d made it to Tennessee. I’ll have to ask them how close it got. It would figure my dad wouldn’t mention it though because he knows I worry.

I fell about 30 feet down an embankment and landed on a cypress stump and broke all the ribs on my left side, punctured my lung, and damaged my spleen. I was swinging on a rope swing out onto a river and the rope snapped. It was horrible, I could barely breathe, I had to sleep sitting up, and it took 12 weeks to heal.

Holy crap! Calling that a nightmare is a gross understatement.

@moffittjc I also would have worried you’d have gotten a blood clot or pneumonia for having to be so still. How long were you in the hospital?

@AmbiePam It definitely was a nightmare! My entire torso was bruised from my waist to my shoulders. I stayed black and blue for weeks. It was a scary time for me.

Oh no so sorry to hear that news. I hope she is ok now and recuperating from that bad fall. I think we grow older the weaker our bones become and out balance also is not as stable as before. Hoping for her fast recovery and strength back soon.

I'm so lucky, so far no broken ribs, just a broken mind but that'll heal soon enough

If I did ever break a rib, I really did not do anything but wrap an ace bandage around it. I was only 17 and it was during a football game

Five broken ribs is going to be very, very painful. Just getting up out of a chair will be excruciating for her. I hope she heals well, as we age, unfortunately we do not heal as fast. With that many ribs damaged, and her age, she will be at high risk for pneumonia, I fear.

I never have. My first husband did while out on the road driving a truck. They just wrapped him up and sent him on his way.

It stinks that that is all they can do. Driving a truck with a broken rib sounds pretty bad.

That’s good! I would have thought a cycling accident would have done a lot of damage. Or, maybe you are just stronger than most people!

@AmbiePam I have had several cycling accidents since I was a kid but they weren't serious ones. The recent one I had was a year ago. There was a traffic jam and for some reason I thought that I had unclipped my cleats, but I hadn't. So when my bike stopped, I fell because I wasn't able to release my shoe from the pedal.

I hope your aunt heals quickly. I've broken a bone in my hand, my collar bone and a bone in my foot but never a rib, thank goodness. I've heard breaking a rib is a miserable time.

@AmbiePam Yes, exactly and the only way to "splint" a rib is to tightly wrap the ribs which make breathing harder.

@AmbiePam I know I've mentioned them a few times. The new supplement I found to strengthen my bones seems to be working. I haven't had any trouble in a couple of months now, for which I'm thankful.

Thank goodness in my 62 years of life I have never broken a rib or bone in my lifetime. Just came close of breaking a knee when I tripped over a dog who was laying on the floor a few years ago.

Well, that is a heckuva thing to happen on vacation! I have never broken a rib but my brother in law has. It is very painful from what I understand, and all you can do is wait for them to heal..although I think sometimes they can tape them.

I know someone who had a broken rib, so they took off work, and did nothing. Which resulted in them getting a blood clot because if you don’t move around you could very well get one of those. He wasn’t thinking, obviously.

FIVE?? I hear broken ribs are very painful as there isn't much that can be done to help them heal. That is such a shame. I'm always very careful now when I'm in the shower. My balance isn't good at all nowadays.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. It's a shame there was no mat, because although she put a towel on the floor, this time it didn't help. However, who wants to step on a much used hotel bath mat? Probably no one.
