Need to pick tile and countertop stone for kitchen

Tomorrow I want to go shopping for stone for the countertop, and tile for the floor and maybe backsplash. The goal is to find something we like and hopefully end up getting it. If we get nothing then things will get delayed as next time we can look for stuff will be the following Thursday, which is hubby's day off.
We've been told that it's best to get quartz for the countertop. I wonder why not granite. That is what I was thinking of getting. And for the floor our contractor says porcelain is the way to go. I guess we can ask the guy at the tile store what he recommends.
I wish I had an interior designer to help me. Would make things a lot easier.

Granite is very expensive, and so often quartz becomes a more affordable option. And they have many styles and shades of quartz that look very similar to granite.
Can’t wait to see the finished product once the renovation is complete!

@lovebuglena Yeah, you’re right. I work at Lowe’s, and I just ran over to the kitchen department and saw that the cost of the two are pretty comparable now. I wonder why the prices came closer together? Quartz used to be so much cheaper than granite.

According to what I found on Home Depot website granite and quartz are around the same price. But in some instances granite may be pricier or vice versa.

Porcelain for the floor? I think that will be slippery if it's wet. That's an expensive choice. Enjoy your day.

We are gonna do matte, not shiny tile. Yeah. Contractor said porcelain is the way to go.

@LindaOHio the tiles? I have no idea. I think I wanna do big squares.

My dad and his wife got quartz, and they are very happy with that choice. For the floors they got porcelain tile, and they are thrilled with that too. You might think it would be slippery, but it isn't. I'm sure you will end up loving what you eventually choose. Just don't get marble! You have to reseal that sucker a lot, and it chips easily.

No marble for us and it is way more expensive it seems.

@lovebuglena Yes, it is! It’s the most expensive, and brittle, but highly wanted for it’s “richness”, I guess.

Quartz is usually cheeper, more durable and low maintenance. That's why it's often recommended. Check texture with floor tiles, because you don't want a free skating lesson if the floor gets wet.

@lovebuglena I don't blame you. I like the feel of glossy, but mat is good, too.

Our contractor said to go with porcelain. We will do matte not glossy. I think we will stick with quartz unless we find granite that will match/go with our cabinets. So far we haven’t.

I love shopping for home improvement stuff. Sometimes I think of studying interior decorating.

I don't mind it but it can be stressful, especially when there are too many options.

@lovebuglena For me, the more choices the better. I usually would look at Pinterest for inspiration of what design and color of tiles would look good. Then which type of materials would last long. So I try to narrow down the choices.

@toniganzon more options makes it much harder to choose.

Quartz still has natural stone in it though, just small pieces of it throughout the countertop. We were told it is resistant to stains and better stands up to chipping.

@lovebuglena My granite countertop was already installed when we bought the house, this means it is there from 1989. It is still perfect, no stains, no chipping. You really need to hit it hard to break it, not even with a hammer I would arrive to made a chipping.

@LadyDuck I’m not opposed to granite but seems hard to find one we like that actually works with our cabinets.

I haven't heard of porcelain on the floor but I don't know anything about floor tiles really.
