Doing my block-ing

To do one’s block means to lose one’s temper but here, ‘blocking’ means something quite different. I’ve promised my friend I’ll join some knitted squares together to make a rug. I think my friend’s mother knitted these many years ago. There are a number of different colours and the sizes vary a little too. The sizing will cause a problem so I have blocked the smaller pieces to try to get them to match the larger ones. I cut a template from a piece of cardboard. That’s the orange you can see in the image. I placed the template on a rug then pinned each piece to fit the template, stretching it if necessary. Then I pressed each piece with a steam iron. While not perfect, this has helped a lot and the pieces are now more or less all the same size. I’ve removed the edging that was around some of the pieces, sewn in all the ends, sorted the colours into some sort of pattern and the next step will be to crochet the pieces together. I thought I had 50 pieces but there is only 33 so I’ll be having five rows of six. Once they’re all joined together, I’ll crochet a border round the whole thing. It’s nice to have a project on the go.

Will you use the extra three as a tail, so it can look like a kite?

@JudyEv A pocket is actualy a cool idea. And a bit more practical than mine. But could a pocket be a foot trap? I can trip over anything here. Even my cat.

@TheHorse I'll probably just end up returning them as they are.

I hadn't thought of that but it's a good idea. Or maybe they could be a pocket on the rug.

Wow! Sounds like a lot of work. I am sure that the end result would be very satisfying. So nice to make use of all these old crocheted squares. I would love to see the end product once it is ready.

I'll put a photo up when I've finished but it will take me a while. Joining the pieces is a bit tricky and I don't think I'll be able to do too many at a sitting.

You have found a job that will keep you busy for a while. Very good idea to steam iron the smaller ones.

@LadyDuck It's nearly impossible to do borders that sit flat. I'm glad I thought to take them off.

Blocking is a job I hate but sometimes it's necessary. I'm sure your efforts will be rewarded with a beautiful finished project. Looking forward to seeing more pictures. I always love having a project in the works.

@Marilynda1225 It will make all the difference to how the finished product looks. They all have the same number of rows and stitches but some of the wool might be a different ply or just lighter somehow.

You will be able to toss out the three that are the most "off". Or make a throw pillow of two of them.

I thought I'd try joining some this afternoon and it's going well. It's not nearly as difficult as i thought it would be. The dark colours are the hardest. I need a good light when I do them.

Thanks. I'm pleased to be able to do this for my friend. It's easy for me really (only because I've done a lot of crochet, etc) but would be quite difficult for her.
