Royal Ancestors may not have been human?

Did you know that some royal and aristocratic families claim descent from mythological beings?
The British royal family are said to descend from Woden, some French aristocratic families are said to be descendants of Melusine (a kind of water spirit, the one you see on coffee cups!) and others are from Aeneas of Troy. The MacLeod family of Scotland are said to have a Fae (fairy) ancestor.
Have you heard of this before? Was it just useful propaganda and a way to claim divine rule? Do you think something was "lost in translation" down the centuries?

If British royalty descended from Woden and French from Melusine, then I must have the blood of both in my veins since one of my ancestors was William the Conqueror who came from Norman aristocracy and whose descendants became British royalty.

I wouldn't believe that. I feel that it's some sort of propaganda to help them.
