Do You Like to Drive?

Seeing @LouAvul's post made me remember about a topic that I've been wanting to post.
Do you like to drive?
I hate driving. Before I retired on disability in 2010, I drove to work Monday-Friday and then did my food shopping at 2 or 3 stores and took myself to all my doctors' appointments. When I worked for a salt company, I drove to southern Ohio and Pennsylvania to visit customers. When we got our second Norwegian Buhund dog, I drove to Michigan with my husband to pick him up.
But now I'm terrified to drive. I am so fearful of getting in an accident. My husband's driving, now that he's older, is getting very sketchy; so I'm afraid I will have to drive from now on.
What about you?

I love driving, and I love road trips. After I "retired" from my career in municipal government a little more than three years ago, I threw all my camping gear in my truck and took off to explore the US, and to visit as many national parks as I could. I had no real plan, nothing mapped out, no reservations or anything like that, I just decided to drive and see where my adventure took me. I put thousands of miles on my truck, and hit just about every corner of this big country of ours. And I loved every minute of it, even those boring drives through the middle of nowhere.

Driving in the middle of nowhere can be exciting I think. Never know what you’re gonna find roaming around.

I can't believe it's been 3 years already. That's the kind of trip we like too. Hubs used to do most of the driving. We only had a reservation for the first couple of days.

In NYC, the instant the light turns green, if the first car doesn’t press on the gas others start honking. And sometimes you’re crossing the street and yet a car will drive at you instead of stopping to let you cross. At least it happened to me more than once.

I agree. Driving in Los Angeles was not good. I remember getting off the roads by about 2 pm to avoid the really heavy traffic.

Pretty and I used to take long trips around the country just to see places that seemed interesting. Sometimes Pretty just liked us to get lost on back country roads and see how long it took us to find our way home again. (I actually hate getting lost but it was a game to her to see if she could get me lost.) She'd pick a direction to drive and I'd drive until she told me to turn... Sometimes it took us hours to find our way to roads/highways I recognized and we'd come home again. Of course, now, I just need to tell my phone to find the way home...
I still drive us everywhere we need to go but am starting to dislike going into larger cities. I don't trust other drivers to stay in their lane...

@LindaOHio I don't blame him. There are too many nuts driving on the freeways.

@DaddyEvil And it's harder to make adjustments at 70 mph. Things can go wrong in a blink of an eye.

My husband is starting to take side roads instead of going on the freeway; so it's obvious that he's not as comfortable driving as he once was.

I don’t feel comfortable behind the wheel. Afraid to drive too. Good thing I live in a city that has lots of transportation. Though it can take hours to get somewhere where it will take you way less to get there by car.

We have Dial-a-Ride and Laketran; but neither is a really good solution.

I like to drive, but I don't love it. I wouldn't want to drive on a long road trip because I am awful at directions, and I have a huge fear of getting lost. But around places I know, I like to drive.

I've had to drive my entire life, there was simply not much choice. For a time, I lived where there is absolutely no public transportation. I had 4 children that had to be taken to ball games out of town, doctor visits in cities, dance lessons...we could go on and on. That, and I traveled a lot for work, which often involved a lot of driving. All a person can do is try to be careful and drive that car. I will admit I refuse to even attempt to drive in Chicago, and I was born there! But we hardly ever go there as there is no real reason to, now.
You have a dilemma, Linda. If he can't drive much longer, then if you want to try to stay where you are, you will have to, or make some kind of arrangement for someone else to drive you. I do know all states have social services for doctor appointments, but the pickup times are not always convenient, from what I have heard. Do you feel safe to drive, as far as your legs, your leg reflexes, and such? I know that can be an issue. My left leg isn't strong due to MS, but the right one is fine.. I gave up driving a stick shift for the most part, as it just got too hard for me. But I still drive, up and down interstates, to see my kids who don't live close by, to doctor and wherever, and to take my son on his endless, and sometimes far away, appointments. If I ever reach the point that I feel I might endanger someone, I will stop, but that hasn't happened, it's good.
I have confidence that if you are able to drive and you have to, due to hubby not driving, you will be fine. I know it must be hard if you're scared. In the end, you can only do what you are able to do. I hope you can work it out.

I'm able to drive, I'm just scared. Hubby thinks the more I drive the better it will be; but that's not the case. It seems like the older we get, the more problems we have. Thanks so much for your comments.

Just an idea for you--start now to drive on some little trips to wherever. Build your confidence, which will help you deal with your fear, and then if you do have to drive soon, it won't slap you in the face with the reality of it all. I know it's not fun for you. You're very welcome.

@MarieCoyle That's what hubby wants me to do. I put it off as much as I can; but I know eventually I will need to drive somewhere. Thanks.

Bob does most of the driving, if we are together. I notice his driving bothers me somewhat. I do not dislike driving, if I like where I am going. I am looking forward to riding the bus though, cause I will not have to scrape the car windows in the winter.

I like to drive but not constantly, and being far from everything there is no other alternative. All I want is to be a passenger sometimes.

@LindaOHio The doctor is at walking distance. My husband drives to the hospital, but when he had surgery I stepped into the Bus here and 10 minutes later I was in front of the hospital. I often walk to the stores and we do not eat out anymore.

I've never liked to drive. I didn't get my license until I was 23 and then only because living in the country I needed to be able to.

When I hit sixteen, I would use any excuse to drive. If my mom needed something from the store, I was there to volunteer! Then, when I was eighteen, a man ran me off the road, and I had a car accident that eventually put me on disability. I seem to have developed PTSD after that. And, even though the accident wasn’t on the interstate, I hate driving especially those roads. At this point, I’m over the PTSD, but driving is just a means to an end for me.

I like to drive but not that often anymore and mostly I stay in my area whereas before 2010 I would go to places like Ruidoso NM which is about a 172 mile drive one way or I'd go to White Sands National Park about 100 miles one way just to take pictures.

I drive, and have been since I was old enough to.
I am a timid driver in the winter months.
I do not love driving, but will always try to maintain my driver's license since it is difficult getting around here in our city without one. I rely on my hubby to drive us when we are together, but there are times that he doesn't want to go with me, if I am going to the hair dresser's or a shopping trip.

I never like driving on highways and fast roadways. I enjoyed driving on city streets back in NYC. When I had the car sent to Riga, Latvia I drove very little and when Martin and I got together I let him do all the driving. The car served us well but with time the insurance and up keep got too expensive and we finally sold it for scrap and enjoyed doing what I do now all on foot. The only difference is that it was easy to get everywhere with transport in Riga but here in Florida I hardly see any busses and I so not take transportation because I think I am going to get lost so I only go as far as my feet will take me,

I've never had a driver's license and fare pretty well without it. I travel mostly on foot around my area and take the bus everywhere else. I live close to all amenities so walking gets me the exercise I need.
