New week, same countdown. I realized that I’ve done nothing but month-long countdowns this year. I kinda like that! This month, it’s songs on the Clear Channel Memorandum, a list of songs the executives thought might be inappropriate for airplay after 9/11. Here’s today’s head-scratcher. Killer Queen - Queen Yeah, that ol’ “gunpowder, gelatine, dynamite with a laser beam” was such a no-no. I don’t know, maybe it was the “let them eat cake” line. Again, it’s the inconsistency that’s the problem. Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All album wasn’t on the list (assuming the offensive word was kill). Or maybe it’s the notion of a high-class hooker that made them said “no.” Whatever, this was Queen’s first big hit in the US, and it’s a classic. By the way, “Another One Bites the Dust” was also on the list. However, their magnum opus about a murder, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” was NOT.
