Our kitchen was done in the wrong color

On Saturday, most of our kitchen was delivered but it was the wrong color. We were expecting a "winter fun" (color) kitchen but instead we got "white chocolate", which we also had in our samples but did not want. Can you believe it? They ended up installing the bottom cabinets Saturday and I was told that the top ones will be installed today (Monday). They would also change everything (cabinet doors, drawer panels, etc.) to our correct color. Or so I thought. Turns out that the bottom cabinets themselves will stay as they are. The border of the cabinets that you see when you open the cabinet doors or drawers is not "winter fun" and it will remain that way. The kitchen guy told us it will not be visible but I see it. And I will see it every time I will open a cabinet drawer or door. Not sure what color it is (I hope it is not "white chocolate") but at least it doesn't stand out too much. I am not sure if top cabinets have the same issue as I didn't check yet but I have a feeling they do. We are still waiting on one cabinet, a few panels, and pantry door and shelves. I have no idea when that will be ready and get installed but I hope it is done soon.

I think you should be able to insist on the work being done as specified or get a credit for their error.

I was told that the front border (whatever you actually call it) doesn't have to be the same color as the cabinets. But still would have been better if it was. At least, it doesn't clash or really stand out much.

@lovebuglena I wonder what your mom would think of it. Have a great day.

@LindaOHio she came and looked. She likes the look and said that wrong color inside doesn’t clash or ruin anything.

If you signed a contract and the color was stated, it's their problem to replace at no cost for you.

@lovebuglena That is bad, if you specified nothing, you cannot prove that the color is the wrong one.

@LadyDuck for the inside border, we weren’t even told what it will be or what the possible options are. I assumed it will be the same color as the cabinets. Same for the bottom of the upper cabinets. They are not winter fun. They are white.

I did not sign anything. We just got a piece of paper (via email) telling us what the total cost is and how much we must leave for the deposit. I don't think it specified the color of the kitchen or exact details of the kitchen either.

I can't believe they weren't willing to fix their mistake 100%. They should give you a significant credit off the bill for this.

To fix that they would probably have to reassemble all the cabinets and remake them with the correct color. I can understand why they would not want to do that.

@MarieCoyle They did replace the cabinet doors, the front of the drawers, and any visible side of the cabinets to the correct color. That is the most important thing.

@lovebuglena I am pretty sure they know it was their mistake. If they were to admit that, they have to replace what they did, and it would be money out of their own pockets, so they are not going to admit it. I’m so sorry that after all the hassle and waiting, it’s not what you picked out. I would be extremely irritated, too.

If you don't get agreed-upon changes in writing with a signature of someone that matters, then there's nothing you can do except whine and moan about things you don't like.

Wow! Now I would never do that but theoretically can't a customer refuse to pay until everything is fixed exactly as it should be?

@lovebuglena You can try that but the contractor just has to sue you if you don't pay. It's up to you to prove that stuff isn't done according to what was agreed between you and the contractor.

@DaddyEvil I still don't get how they did the kitchen in the wrong color when I sent the name and a picture of the sample to the guy.

You could have cabinet drawer liners to hide the color or paint them.

The shelves or pull out drawers are fine. It is the front side of each side of a cabinet that is a different color than I thought.

I would have thought you could insist on them doing what they originally agreed to do. Have you tried insisting? With something as expensive as this, I would try everything before I gave into them. That's just wrong for them to do.

Apparently, that front border (that's created when you put the cabinet together) doesn't have to be the exact color/design of the cabinets themselves. Why is that I wonder? I think it's best if it's an exact match. I also wonder if it was not the same color because it was done on purpose or if it was a screw up on their part? I guess I will never know. But to change that to the exact color of the cabinets they would have to take everything apart and do it from scratch (for the most part). They would not want to do that.

Part of my job at Lowe's is coordinating delivery of kitchen cabinets for installs. I think about 90% of the cabinets we deliver are returned to us because they are wrong. Wrong size, wrong color, wrong construction materials, etc. I don't even know why we are in the cabinet business, there's no way we can be making any money when everything is always wrong. I'm sorry your cabinet order was wrong, they really should fix it to the way you want it instead of making you live with what you got.
