A Scary Day at UNC-Chapel Hill

News of any shooting is unwelcome. News of a shooting in a place where a loved one goes to school is frightening. Yesterday, when the news of the shooting on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill reached K and me, our first thought was for Son2's fiance. (Yes, she's been upgraded from GF to fiance.) Thankfully, she texted us to let us know she was unhurt and out of harm's way. Yesterday was her first day at her new job on campus and she spent 3 of her 4 hours at work locked down in a dark office with her colleagues. Law enforcement has been unable to determine a motive or whether it was a targeted or random attack. There was only one victim-a professor. This makes me think it was a targeted shooting. The suspected shooter is in custody. The gun used has not been recovered. Here is the most recent update I could find.

What a horrible experience on her first day at her new job. I am glad she is well and unhurt.

She is putting a brave face on it. I'm wondering how Son2 is handling the news. He's in Ireland with his brother until the end of the week. I haven't heard from him and don't know what he's heard about the incident.

@DWDavis I hope your son still knows nothing about the incident. I have heard nothing here for the moment.

@LadyDuck I heard from the boys this morning. They didn't mention it, so neither did I.

How sad. Hopefully that’s the only time she ever has to face such a traumatic event.

Sadly, it wasn't the first time. Lockdowns are becoming part of American life.

@DWDavis — ever watched mob documentaries? They always talk about a mob boss sitting in a restaurant facing the door so he can see who’s coming in. We’re all becoming mafia bosses.

@FourWalls I've been doing that for years. I learned it from reading Dune when I was a teen.

@DWDavis That is the reason why some Asians are scared to go out at night there.

@Shavkat A sad irony of this case is that both the graduate student who fired the fatal shot and the professor he killed were Chinese. The professor was the student's academic advisor.

I saw this on the news and I'm always shocked to see it happen over and over again. I'm certainly glad that your sons fiancé is ok but what a horrible experience for her and her colleagues. It must have been quite frightening for you too knowing she was there.

It was all I could do not to jump in the truck and head up there when I got the news. Only knowing there was nothing I could do but get in the way kept me home.

@DWDavis I hope your sons fiancé doesn't have lasting PTSD from being in such a harrowing experience.

We were relieved to hear from her. It was all I could do not to jump in the truck and head up there.

She was frightened. Fortunately, she was with several co-workers. Unfortunately, this was not the first time she'd been in a lockdown during a shooting situation.

I heard about it yesterday. That would been a scary situation. I didn't know it was a former student. That is sad it was a professor that was killed.

The shooter was a Ph.D. student and was mad at the professor who was his advisor. The student is being charged with first-degree murder.
