Day 58 Luke 1:57 Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. 59 So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias. 60 His mother answered and said, “No; he will be called John.” 61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62 So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So, they all marveled. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. 65 Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66 All those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him. One of the most joyous occasions in a person’s life is the birth of their child. Celebrations take place before and after the birth with baby showers and people who come to see the child after it’s born. John’s birth was no ordinary birth. Elizabeth was beyond the age of childbearing. When her neighbors and relatives heard about his birth they came to rejoice and celebrate with her. When they asked what they would name him, they were further amazed when they named him John. As soon as Zacharias wrote his name on the tablet, he could speak and praise God for what He would do in John’s life, while everybody wondered what kind of child he would become. As Christians, your birth wasn’t ordinary either. People marveled and wondered what kind of person you would become for the Lord when you accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord. Your friends in the world hoped you would come to your senses and give up what they considered a passing fad. However, when God has His hand on you, you won’t turn back but move forward in your walk with Him. What kind of person did you become when you gave your life to Jesus? Did you remain steadfast in your faith and move forward, or did you fizzle out and sit on the sidelines and watch while others stronger in their faith moved forward and left you behind? You can move forward and become what God intended for you when you said yes to Him. Every day is a new birth in Him. You can step out in faith and watch what God will do in your life. If you are strong in your faith, praise God and nurture those who need help in their walk. A Christian is active in their walk. You might not think you are important to God’s plan, but you are. Every person has a place in God’s plan. God’s plan for John was to prepare the way for the Messiah. What has God called you to do? Do it with all your might, praising God every day for working in your life to fulfill His purpose through you. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for giving me a new birth in You. Let me step out in faith in Your purpose for me, knowing You will be with me every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Praise God! I was reading in the book of Mark this morning, and in the application notes it talks about how Mark started off his book with a bang, skipping the story of the birth of Jesus and going straight to the part where he was baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus didn't come quietly or unannounced into the world, John the Baptists (and other prophets before him) paved the way to make the world ready for the Messiah's arrival. How blessed are we that God followed through on his promise and gave us the gift of salvation through the blood of Christ!
