We watched ’12 (Mighty) Orphans’ a night or two ago. It is based on the book ‘Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football’ written by Jim Dent. The twelve orphans came from the Masonic School for Orphans which operated in Fort Worth, Texas.
In those times, orphans were considered ‘beneath’ everyone else but Russell and his wife were able to make a difference to the 160-odd boys and girls who were housed there.
The legendary football coach, Rusty Russell, was himself an orphan and became head coach at the Masonic Home in 1927 and stayed to 1941. Russell developed innovative strategies that went on to define modern football. Russell’s period as coach covered the Great Depression and the struggles of his team became an inspiration to much of the country, even drawing the attention of President Franklin D Roosevelt.
This is another film you might like to look out for.

We certainly enjoyed it. @Dena91 @RubyHawk @1creekgirl The other thing I liked about it was that the violence inflicted by the supervisor was 'heard' but not 'seen' so, while the few beatings were awful, you weren't subjected to graphic footage of it.

I'll have to hunt that down as I've never heard of it and DH loves his Foosball. I also like historical films (as long as they aren't too fast and loose with history).
