Red Lipstick

In ancient times in Greece, prostitutes were made to wear make-up. It was against the law for a woman of the night not to wear make-up when she was outside her home. When they examined Elizabeth I after her death they found she may have been poisoned by her makeup. She had a quarter of an inch of what she was using for bright red lipstick still on her lips. Both that and the face makeup were lead-based and had mercury in them as well. Women's lib in the early days was signified by red lipstick. Women wore bright red lipstick to protest women's rights. During World War I women wore red lipstick to protest Hitler's horrific treatment of humans in Germany. He hated red lipstick. He felt that the healthy Arryan woman should have well-scrubbed faces.

I have never been able to pull off red lipstick. I just don’t look right in it.

It's an ugly color. I don't care for it at all.

I’ve read about the poison in make up at that time. The eye make/was especially:dangerous.

Interesting facts. I never could wear red lipstick with my coloring. I always wore pale shades. Now I don't wear any makeup at all. Have a great weekend.

Lead, mercury and arsenic were quite common ingredients in make-up at one time. A lot of the lead face paint was worn by men as well as women from Elizabethan times into the 18th Century. Some cosmetic companies are marketing to men again these days.
