Do You Need a Smartphone to Use a Smartwatch?

I know very little about the watches on which you can track your steps and monitor your sleep, etc. I want a watch that will monitor my sleep hours and quality of sleep.
My question is: Can the watch be used without the use of a smartphone or do you need a smartphone to use all the functions?
Thank you.

@LindaOHio I thought you only needed a smartphone for a smartwatch in certain brands. I could be very wrong, but I think there are some brands you don’t. But they would know more. Actually, I’m going to text my BIL, the technology genius, and ask him. He has one.

@AmbiePam Are you wanting a complete smartwatch or just a Fitbit? Because for a Fitbit you don’t have to have a smartphone. I double checked on the internet, and you just need a computer.
*I talked to my IT working BIL and he said there ARE standalone smart watches, and you do not necessarily have to have a smartphone. I also looked it up online. Smartwatches you don’t need a smartphone for include Garmin, Fitbit, Amazon…
Hope it helps.

From what I've read, I would need a smartphone...which I don't have.

There are some watches out there that can give you cell service so you can use more functions. And while you don't need a smart phone for most watches to work, you do need it to track and record data . It would depend on what you're using it for, and what you want to get out of it. Fitness trackers like Fitbit, do everything on the watch, but you need the app (and pay for it) to get all the features. So, it depends on what you're trying to do.

@LindaOHio There are apps for that if you already have a smart phone. And, if you don't Android has a lot of budget-friendly options. If you go through a carrier, they also offer discounts and installment plans. While fitness trackers can do things such as track steps and sleep, you still need a corresponding app to set them up. Which does require a smart phone.

@kaylachan Thanks. I won't buy a smartphone just so I can track my sleep. We have basic flip phones and hardly ever use them.

I had an old "pedometer" to track my steps, smartphones did not even exist when I bought it. It was very simple, but it only counted the steps. I should use it again.

@LadyDuck It really annoys me how many things you need a smartphone for today. You can't participate in a lot of things because you can only join with a smartphone.

It isn't a requirement to use a smartphone with a smartwatch, but as Kayla described below you get more functions with it. I think I killed my smartwatch charger I need to order another.

A lot of it can be read on the watch. But for more information on sleep quality you need the app. Fitbit has an app that you can download on most computers. It's free so check the play store on whatever you are using.

So many different opinions. Medical Mutual is offering a "free" smartwatch. I will have to see what brand it is.

@LindaOHio Check out cheap smart phones and plans. We got rid of our home phone and only have cell phones.

@paigea I won't get a smartphone and phone charge just to track my sleep on a smartwatch. We have a landline and basic flip phones. We hardly ever use our cell phones. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I am sorry because I am clueless on this subject. I'm not interested in owning a smartwatch.
Can you get any apps on your flip phone? It's been a long time since I used a flip phone, I can't remember all that it did.
You could get a good smart phone from Wal-Mart, like an LG which I use. I think we paid between $50-60 for it. We use Tracfone as our provider because it is cheaper than when we were with Verizon. We buy cards as we need them, maybe 2-3 times a year versus what we were paying Verizon monthly ($60) Tracfone is part of Verizon so you'd be using their cell tower networks. Just a thought.

No, it's a basic flip phone with no internet connection. Thanks for the suggestion.

@LindaOHio You’re welcome. I haven’t worn a watch in a long time. I look at my phone to check the time.
