Are You Afraid of Flying?

From kite flying in the 5th Century B.C. in China to Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of aircraft in the 1480s and 1490s to the Montgolfier brothers invention of the hot-air balloon in the late 1700s to the Wright brothers successful flight in 1903 to the jumbo jets of today, man has been obsessed with flight. I never used to be afraid of flying. Now when I look at those huge jumbo jets and all the people and luggage that they carry, I wonder how they get the planes off the ground. I have flown in small planes 4 times and feel much safer in them even though I know there are a lot of small plane crashes. How about you? Have you ever flown? Are you afraid of flying? Have you ever flown in a small plane? Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons - The Wright brothers

The first half of my life I flew many times and I loved it. They were mostly military flights and I felt very safe. When I was in ROTC in high school we got to have a ride in a helicopter. It was quite a thrill.

I have never been in a helicopter and have no desire to ride in one. I wish Stevie Ray had had the same sentiment.

I don't think I'd ride in a helicopter.

@LindaOHio @TheHorse I was too young to give it much thought. It would probably terrify me now.

I prefer big planes to small ones. Last night, we watched the film Sully about the plane that landed in the Hudson river. How scary would that have been??

I'm not afraid of flying. I've not done it often, but I quite enjoyed it. My first flight was in a smaller plane, and that was to do a skydive (an awesome experience but one I don't intend to repeat ). The only other time I have flown was in commercial planes to and from Spain. That was my first and (so far) only trip abroad. We flew late night/early morning. I was fascinated on the way there, but mostly slept on the way back!

@LindaOHio Yes, skydiving was something I thought looked good but would never do. Then someone volunteered me to do one for charity My husband had done a lot of jumps while he was a para with the army, and he encouraged me as well! Our flight home from Spain was at 4am with a 2am coach transfer. I couldn't have stayed awake if I wanted to ??

@pumpkinjam I would never do a skydive. I'm petrified of heights.

No, I’m not afraid of flying. I have never been on the small planes though; just the big jumbo jets.

I think that the concept of man flying has always been in the back of men's minds. The last time I flew was to Oklahoma to visit my BFF. It was rather unnerving in the small six-passenger plane I had to take from Oklahoma City to Mangum. The big one not so much. That was probably in the late 70s and I haven't flown since.

@LindaOHio .......I might have felt a little safer if the pilot hadn't dipped the plane a couple of times.

For some reason the smaller plane make me feel safer. They shouldn't.

@celticeagle We had one like that in the Outer Banks. It was really hot outside and the plane was stifling. I was getting airsick; and he was doing fancy maneuvers.

Well, yes and no. I’m not afraid of flying, but I don’t like confined spaces with things that I can’t control (such as people wearing perfume that would cause me to have an asthma attack, or drunk and unruly people). I also have a problem with liking my luggage and myself arriving at the same destination. As Gallagher once said, “ I went to the airport, and told the lady at the check-in counter, I want this bag to go to Dallas and this bag to Cleveland. She said, we can’t do that! I said, why not? You did it last week!“ As I was stationed in Hawaii, yes, I’ve flown. I also flew in a small Navy plane, which was an awful experience.

I'm afraid that the wings won't move and I've felt that when the rainfall is high, the plane will shake a little.

I have flown so many times, in small planes and in very large Jumbo jets and once in the Concorde, the most noisy and uncomfortable plane I have ever tried.

I heard that the Wright brothers had a sister who helped in their efforts. Of course I could be mixing that up with somebody else. My daughter was close to getting her small plan license a few years ago. I am not super comfortable with being in an airplane but I can live with it. I do hate the tiny seats and I hate how my back gripes when I crawl out of them.

@LindaOHio I barely fit into those bitty seats. First class is super spendy.

@sallypup It sure is. If we ever fly again, which I doubt, we would splurge and go first class.

I have flown dozens of times in my life. I accept when I climb on board that I am giving up control of my life for a few hours.

@LindaOHio It kind of is. But hey, they say that soaring through the air at 500 mph in an aluminum tube is safe, so who am I to argue?

@porwest Then you get on the plane, sandwiched between two people, no view out a window. I've always gotten a window seat (my hubby is very kind that way). I would not want to be in a seat in which I can't see out the window!!!!!!!

I am afraid of flying Don't know why as I used to be a very very frequent flyer. Back in the day I used to go to Prague twice a month and over to Ireland sometimes weekly. Now there's no way I'd get on a plane. Just last week me and my sister went to Birmingham to pick up my dad who'd flown in from glasgow and it stressed me out

I don't blame you. They keep putting more and more passengers on these planes; and I don't know how they keep them in the air!!!
